DV Video Capture, codecs, Divx, help!

I have a JVC MiniDV video camera, SIIG 1394 card, Ulead Video Studio 4.0 SE.

I am able to capture video just fine, but have two questions.

1. Is there any software better than ULead?

2. What codec is the best for encoding.

I have tried MPEG1, Divx, MPEG4V2 and all seems ok. MPEG1 does not allow high resolutions. DivX and MPEG4V2 allow higher resolutions but I am not sure if they are a standard yet. I want to make sure that all my video stuff is not worthless in couple years because the codecs disappear. I have also used Cinepak and other avi compressors, but the bit rate is usually to high (files to big, won't play off a CD).

Any suggestions for a high quality, low bit rate, codec, or new software?

you could get a perception board🙂
each frame is a different image..as good as a resolution you want. of course the board requires its own hard drive.
