DV editing questions

Hey all,

I just got a DV Camcorder, and am looking forward to making my own movies. Just wondering what is required to process this info. Do I need a capture card? I have a firewire card already in my system, is this considered the capture card? Any links or info will be greatly appreciated.

Firewire is all you need. DV is recorded as digital data, not analog. You're basically transferring data from the camcorder to the PC. You need good software though, start with something easy to use if you're new to video editing. Ulead VideoStudio is good.

AbsolutZero,

That is the exact software that I purchased (Ulead Video Studio 5.0). So the firewire is what I need then. Kool, should start messing with it pretty soon. Just wanted to ensure that I had all I need to be able to start. I would have hated to give up my GF3 for something less as far as video is concerned, just to have capture capabilities. Thanks for the info. Anybody have some links to sites dedicated to this?

Couple of notes to make your entrance into DV editing easier.

1) You must have Win98se or later (winme, 2k, ect...). Plain 98 will not work at all and MS has no driver updates, it was a SE feature.

2) Get DX8 and the Video/Camcorder patch for it because they have improved the interface some.

3) Will need to have lots of free HD space, I would say 30 gigs is a good start. The full res AVI from the camera takes lots of space.

4) if your interested in conversion into other formats or making video cds, go here, lots of good info: VCDS

Good Luck !

Helznicht,

Thanks for the tips! I am running WinME, DX 8.0a, one 80GB HDD and one 20GB HDD. I dont have the patch that you spoke of though 🙁
