Okay, finally got my spanking new computer up and running and in, what I thought was, a stable setup. Here are the specs:
AMD 1.4ghz
ABIT KG7 non-raid
Crucial PC2100 DDR 256x2
WD 800BB 80gig HDD
Gainward Geforce 2 Pro
Sound Blaster MP3 5.1
USR 56k Fax pci
Pinnacle Studio DV Firewire pci
My camcorder is:
JVC GR-DVL915 camcorder
Okay, I install Premiere 6, power up the camcorder, plug in the firewire and plug it into the firewire port. The Windows hardware thingie pops up and starts to install the drivers for the firewire connection, which goes smoothly. When it comes time to install the driver for the DV cam, that's when things go screwy. I installed the drivers off the pinnacle studio dv disc that came in the package. It loads the drivers off the cd then asks for the windows cd. I put it in and halfway through, it chokes on a file called stream.sys or something like that. I get a blue screen and a error message. I press a button to resume and the screen freezes. I reboot, only to find out that my registry's been trashed. I have to reinstall Windows over just to restore it.
So, after that initial foolishness, I get the courage to try it again. This time, I close all applications and try it again. This time, Windows chokes on the same file at the same time. I reboot and the registry is trashed again except this time the Registry checker reverts to an older copy.
After both instances, Premiere fails to recognize my DV cam, the DV Cam driver under the Control Panel/System menu is not there and I'm feeling like a jackass. So, what am I doing wrong?
I've installed the 1394 controller as a Texas Instrument OCHI compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller. Windows tells me that this isn't the right driver but my Pinnacle manual says this is correct. I had the same problem when the host controller was installed as a vanilla OCHI compliant host.
JVC's website is horrendous and I'm not going to get any help there. Premiere doesn't seem to list my DV Cam model in it's supported devices. I need a few things to happen:
1) Get Windows to recognize my DV cam interface and not have it choke up and/or thrash the registry during the driver installation
2) Get Premiere to recognize my DV cam and allow me to capture the video from dv cam to HDD and vice versa
3) Somehow stop myself from physically hurting my computer
Any help is, as always, appreciated!!! You'll even get a thank you in my documentary that I'm desperately trying to edit!!!
