A few years ago I decided to put my gaming desktop in the closet in favor of my MSI GT72 Dominator Pro. However lately I've been missing gaming on a bigger screen and I feel the GTX 980M starting to slow down.
I decided I wanted to setup a gaming desktop again. Initially I felt my old PC was beyond hope and I'd be better off just building an entry level AMD system. Was thinking a Ryzen 5 2600 with a B450 motherboard and some $200ish graphics card, pretty basic just to play some games at 1080p. But then I convinced myself that perhaps my old desktop could still be used a little bit longer with just a new graphics card. I have an Intel Core i5 2500K overclocked to 4.5GHz, 16GB of DDR3, a couple 256GB EVO 850 SSDs, and a 700 watt Seasonic PSU. I sold my GTX 680 a while ago.
Since I was originally planning on building an AMD system (and may still go that route later next year) I was leaning towards an AMD graphics card. I saw a deal on an XFX RX 580 Black Edition card for $160 at Best Buy over Black Friday. It seemed like a decent price. So I went and bought it.
I did some gaming with it, but was getting a horrible sound from my computer case. I thought something was rubbing against a fan. So I opened the case, didn't see anything near my fans. The noise was coming from the graphics card. It only happened while gaming. Idle it was quiet. Someone came into my room because they thought I was sawing something. It was way too loud. After make sure it wasn't the fans, I could only assume this was the loudest coil whine I've ever heard in my life. I did some research and sure enough, found a Youtube video of someone demonstrating their RX 580 making the same loud noise.
Before returning or exchanging the card. I started hearing about the RX 5500 coming later this year (supposedly) and the GTX 1650 Super that just came out. So now I became really torn about what to do with the RX 580. Exchange or return and get something else? The GTX 1650 Super looks like it's on par with the RX 580, and is much newer, more efficient, and has newer features like nvenc (may get the Plex server going again). But the RX 580 has 8GB of RAM and the XFX model has a really nice looking cooler on it. Decisions, decisions.
I chose the GTX 1650 Super. Mainly because it's GPU is pretty new, more efficient, and the RX 580 GPU is 2 or 3 years old already and I'll be gaming mostly at 1080p on a 32 inch TCL TV (don't laugh, I'm actually like this as a monitor). I bought the EVGA GTX 1650 Super SC Ultra (these names are long) for $180. Seems like I'm paying an extra $20 over the MSRP for the backplate and lack of availability of other cards at the moment. But still within the budget.
So once I get my graphics card, this is what my old PC will look like...
cpu: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.5GHz
memory: 16GB DDR 3
graphics: Nvidia GTX 1650 Super
storage: Samsung EVO 850 256GB (x2)
power: 700 watt Seasonic
case: Antec Nine Hundred
Next I'm thinking of replacing the CPU, memory, and motherboard with my original idea of a Ryzen 5 2600, B450 mini-ATX motherboard, and some DDR4 memory. Looking at the 2600 because I can drop it into a B450 without worrying about needing a BIOS update for compatibility. Though if I can find a B450 that will support a 3000 series out of the box, then I may get the 3600 instead.
And finally I'll finish up the by getting a mini-ATX case (another reason I'm glad I returned the RX 580, it was pretty big) and a new PSU. Can't wait to have USB 3 ports on my case.
