I've got a dust spot inside of my slr lense, and it's showing up in my pictures. Does anyone know how I can clean it? Or should I bring it in somewhere?

Thanks for any advice!

I don't think there's really anything you can do about that. I've never heard of taking a lens apart to clean it (at least not an SLR lens, maybe a view camera or something...)

Is it an expensive lens?

Not much you can do. If it gets too bad you can send it back to the factory for cleaning. Otherwise, a few dust particles will not affect your photos. Dust on the sensor is a different story.

Are you sure it's on or in the lens?

Most of the time the dust is actually on the sensor.

Best way to tell is to take off the lens and then shine a flashlight through the back end and look through it.

I remember using an enlarger and always having to be careful of dust so that it wouldn't show up on the prints, wasn't any fun using brushes to get rid of dust.

It must be a big spot of dust to show up on your pictures. Extreme dust on the lens usually results in a reduction in contrast, and if it's really bad, clarity and brightness.
I've got a fair amount of dust on my sensor now. :(

Well clean it off! I was deathly afraid to do it at first... but got a nice sensor cleaning kit that had a rocket blower (most of the time just this alone will work) and some swaps and some cleaner.

Just dont use compressed air.

Blow, swab, and your done.

Why don't you use compressed air?

The liquid in compressed air will leave a residue if *ANY* gets on the sensor. When I was naive, I made this mistake. That scared the living sh!t out of me, and took a proper wet cleaning kit to get off.

I've just been lazy. I figure that if I'm constantly cleaning my sensor when it will have no impact on the images that I shoot, what's the point? 99% of my shots are at f/8 or larger apertures. At f/11, the dust shows up as barely discernible large circles, which are only visible on flat parts of the image (same color and brightness).

If it is inside the lens, you should be able to take it to a good camera shop for repair. Sometimes they can do it inshop but most often they can send it to the factory for you. The one in my town has also helped me price comparable new and used lenses...
