Dust Collection System Thoughts

Anybody here cough up the dough for a decent dust collection system for their shop? My dad wants to buy a system. I had no idea they cost so much! Looking at $300.00 minimum for the 1,200CFM main vacuum unit. That's model #21337 from Sears. Add another $100.00 for one by Delta or Jet. Sheesh! Then there's all the duct, elbows, hoods and gates. Is there an inexpensive way to accomplish the same thing? Any shortcuts? I'm wondering if a 650CFM unit would do the job. Only one tool at a time will be running, so why not?

Cripes, that sounds more expensive than the dust collection units I'm looking at! At least you wouldn't have to listen the the dang motor screaming. I hate that more than the dust!

I mentioned buying a shop vac instead, but he seemed to know the volume of the hose would not be enough. I guess he's done some research, and is prepared to pay the freight, but he asked me if I knew of a lower priced source than Sears. I'm not finding any!
