Duron unlocking?

I suppose this will be a bonehead "i've heard that..." posts, but here goes!

I've heard that it's possible by connecting the bridges on a Duron processor to more or less convert it into an Athlon by enabling the L2 cache. Is this actually possible, and if so, which contacts need to be connected? Also, does the same method for unlocking the multiplier on the Athlon XP's work on the Durons as well?

You just need a mechanical pencil and thats it basically

There is an indepth article on this site if you search regarding this procedure - very easy and quick to make the mods too 🙂

Yes, it is possible to unlock the Duron, by just connection the L1 bridges with a pencil, or conductive ink (those pens...). I used a .7mm Mechanical and a magnifying glass. Then, I lowered the multiplier and changed the FSB to 133. Now I basically have a slightly faster Duron, mor like an Athlon, just without that extra cache.

I'm not sure which Duron you have - however Duron Morgans >1Ghz will OC to somewhere around 1.2/1.3Ghz.
My 1Ghz runs at 1.2Ghz all day and night at 1.825v

I have just ordered an XP1600+ from newegg and shall be attempting to overclock this. Unfortunately it is not quite such a simple method as the pencil with these CPU's to unlock them.

I know about unlocking the multiplier by connecting the L1 bridges, but is there any way to unlock the L2 cache to more or less turn it into an athlon?

I'm going on memory here - but I don't think it was possible to do that.

I remember something about blowing certain circuits or something - and that could not be undone by "mortal" intervention 😉 - I'm sure a google search will bring something up?

An Athlon comes with 256K of L2 cache, the Duron or Morgan 64K. This is done internally in the die, so whether AMD removed it, didn't put it in or simply disabled it, you can't do anything about it. For any Duron or Morgan core, simply using the pencil trick to connect all the L1 bridges, whether it be 4 or 5, will unlock the multiplier.

The answer is NO.

I just unlocked my Duron 750 last week, EASY AS HECK! Just used a window defogger repair kit, and a set of jewelers screwdrivers, took me maybe 1 minute to sand the contacts to SHINY GOODNESS, and then another minute or two to put a line of defogger repair over each pair of bridges (4 of them) and voila! 🙂

I was kinda hesitant about it, seeing as it was the first one I've done, but now that I've done it, I'd have no qualms about doing it again......
