Duron PSU requirements

Hey All,

I have a friend who wants to sell me a mb and Duron 600. I know Athlons are picky about psu's and they should be at least 300w, but do Durons have the same requirements?

Thanks,

RCraig

It's not the CPU as much as it is the MB. With normal disclaimers of course, you should be able to run a "low end" system with a 600 Duron with a 250 watt PS. I don't think I'd go any lower though. Depending on the MB, you really should just go ahead and use a 300 watt so that you have enough overhead for additional hardware added to the system.

Don't know what you have now, but my inexpensive Sparkle 300 BTVS with 200 watts combined on +3 & +5 powered my Duron 950 and this XP1600+@1900+ with power to spare. 220 watts combined gives even more power for later expansion.

This is an Abit mb, forget the model, but it's a KT133 chipset. It will probably have a Radeon 7000 video card, so I guess if i get this, I'll have to also buy a psu.

Not entirely true. What is the make and model of the PS you have now? Yes, with a power hungry video card your requirements will increase. To what extent is a variable.

I'll have to check the brand of psu when I get home from work. I think it might be an Antec PSU, but I'm not sure.

This is a third system that isn't used much and has a K6-2 550 in a Gigabyte GA-5AX mb. I had problems with this setup and the video card until I put a V5500 in it. This solved the problem of power to the video card because the card gets it's power from the psu, not the mb. I've also heard newer video cards that don't need as much power will also work. If I get this new setup, the old will be for sale. 😉
