Is the best value the Duron? And is the performance differences small???

Duron is by far the best bang for the buck, and since it uses the same socket as a T-Bird, it shouldnt' be hard to upgrade later.

It depends on what you want your system to do. If you are a really hard core gamer, get the T-Bird. The Duron should be more than sufficient for anything else though

Depends on whether you are the type that doesn't mind getting your hands dirty or prefer to have it all done for you.

If you buy the right mobo and heatsink/fan, you can take a $70 Duron 600 and run it at 900 or faster.

If you like things neat and tidy, you can find a 850MHz Tbird for around $225 and get the same results.

That's the difference between the two.

I picked up a Duron 600 at a show last week for $57. It's running stable at 900MHz. What more is there to say?

I had a Duron 600 garanteed at 950. I really did not like it and it was far from stable (getoverclocked.com - avoid!!) and that was with my Alpha. So, I went and sold the duron, and bought a Thunderbird 900 and its stable at 1ghz. Now, thats not as much bang for buck as a Duron I agree, but I do find it faster than the Duron.

THe Duron has ondie cache, the difference is the TBird has 256 KB and the Duron has 64 KB.

Hmm, Duron has 64Kb of 2nd level cache right? Do they have 128Kb of level 1? How much does the Tbird have for level 1?

Apologies, I forgot the specs. I had a general idea that a fast and large level 1 cache was essential for performance due to the chip design.

NSF4: Isn't it incredible what can happen to pricing in one week? :D

Once again, thanks to AMD, the consumer is the winner.
