Duron/KT7 CPU Temp question

Hi, I just upgraded to a Duron 750, up from a P3-450. I'm looking at the VIA hardware monitor software here, and it says my cpu is running at 37 degrees celsius, and the system is running at 28 degrees celsius. Then it says that the "CPU Hysteresis Temperature" is 40 C, but it's an open field, ostensibly changeable by me. Same goes for the "System Hysteresis Temperature". They're both at 40 C. I've got 2 questions:

First, is this CPU and system temp I'm reporting here (37 and 28 degrees C respectively, with the case open) normal? I have the retail AMD heatsink/fan combo, and the additional fan that comes on the Abit KT7 motherboard. No additional cooling besides the power supply fan (chassis fan is busted).

Second, what the heck is the "Hysteresis Temperature"?? Is it good, or bad?

I gotta ask, because I've had a couple of random lockups, and I have no idea whether this is a heat-related issue or just Windows mucking around again. This was the first time I've dealt with a Duron installation, and the heatsink/fan installation was a bit tricky, but I'm pretty confident I got it on right (and, yes, I did remove the plastic cover from the thermal compound).

Many thanks to whoever can help, and sorry for the newbie questions.

Not so bad, real danger is over 65-70.
But a little hot for a non o/c setup.
Might wanna get a better case coling.
read how a 120mm fan can change it here.

Zaku,

Your measurement's are extremely off. The only way a 1ghz with taisol is running at 30C is if your ambient case temperature is around 6C.

Which BIOS version are you using the KT7?

zaku, that is amazing temperature. What is your room temperature?

My 600@980 is running at 42C CPU and 25C System with case closed and only one front 80mm fan.

My D700 @ 1083 with a Cooler Master DP5-6H11 Heatsink/Fan and 4 case fans (includes 2 blowholes) is running at 36 Celcius. Current system temp is 22 with the case closed.

Your temps sound inline.

One way to tell if your BSODs are heat related is if you notice more instability as you leave your computer on longer and less BSODs when you cold boot (after leaving it off for a while).

Dan,

your temps are also amazingly low and amazing incorrect. with a case temp of 22, and a coolermaster heatsink that performs okay, you're looking a cpu core temp around 32 or so C above ambient temp.

that's an error of 62%. Your mb is reporting temps almost 18C too low.

Those Temperatures sound okay, I am using the Coolermaster Athlon fan (up to 1.2ghz) and I have had my systemn on for a few hours now and my system is at 30c and my cpu is at 41c, I have a bit of heatsink compound on there.

One important thing to note is that some KT7 cpu temp readouts are not 100% accurate because you have to bend the temp reader a bit to get the cpu on, something that made me thing it was a return goods to sender problem when I encountered it at first.

If you damaged the tip, it can read much higher than the actual temp.

I only have 1 case fan at present, mine is a full tower though and it remains pretty cool.

Hysteresis Temperature is minimum temp, an interesting addition to the system monitor.
