Duron and some little pads ?

This is going to sound so stupid, but I've just got a 1.3ghz Duron chip sitting here, and it has four little pads on the top. These seem pretty much welded to the surface, but I haven't seen them before. Do I remove these, or are they heat retardant ?

Thanks a bundle,

Tom

Sounds more like you have never seen a Socket A cpu...? Those little pads are to help stablize the HS/fan when you mount it... Also to help prevent you from cracking or chipping the core...

DO NOT REMOVE THEM... 😉

It generally varies a lot, Rivergater. You can break processors without making any visible markings on the core, but then again, you can have a CPU that works even with gigantic gouges in it. Generally a chipped core is extremely bad even though it works because there is less surface area to transfer heat to the HSF.

Don't be so heavy, guys 😉. True, it's not a very good idea to remove those pads, but doing so certainly doesn't doom your CPU. Just be careful, as always, when mounting Socket A heatsinks. The pads are supposed to keep the thing level, but the fact is they are not very important.
