Hey peeps.

I'm putting together a box which does nothing but play an mp3 stream. I need it as cheap and as small and as quiet as i can.

I am thinking (and can source)

Duron 800
MSI MS-6340M
Enlight mATX case with a 145w psu
32mbs SDRAM
old seagate 850mb HDD

It's onboard graphics, going to be running nothing more than a linux command line so nothing at all to deal with. No CDROM, no floppy. probably another chassis fan though.

Am i going to have problems with the Durons power hungry nature?

most likely. If all you want this for is to play mp3s, a P133 would be more than adequate. I am quite serious here; MaxPC had an article where they made a n mp3 player for a car, and they used a P166 I believe. You could use a Pentium or K6, and not have to worry about a heatsink Fan. Or, you could use a VIA C3 chip, which even at 667MHz do not require even passive cooling. But I wouldn't go the AMD route, for both the reasons that they suck a lot of power and generate a lot of heat.

Theoretically it should be enough, but in practice, a lot of people are having trouble with small psu's. Durons seem to be finicky about psu. They must pull a lot of power at startup or something because the problem most people have is it will run fine once started but it won't fire up reliably. Run a search, you'll find a lot of people asking questions about why their Duron system won't start after shutdown and in most cases it is power supply related.

Then again, if it is cheap, I'm always in for at least trying it.

The PSU may or may not work well (likely won't). For MP3 playing, however, a Pentium 90 is enough, and a P166 is more than enough, and not ticky about PSUs. Also, with an old Pentium, you can just put a heatsink on it, and not worry much about cooling.

Current truck setup:
P166 on a micron board (exact make unknown)
16MB memory
4GB HD
Good old SB16
Inverter
Numeric keypad
Stereo with an inout jack in the front.
Uses Win98SE set to start in real DOS mode, with a batch file (named 5.bat, so the keypad can be used) to start MXPlay, a DOS MP3 player.

Runs flawlessly in the toolbox of the truck.

If you do decide to go with the 800 Duron, I'm having good success with an Amptron K7-810LMR (730 SiS Chip-set) mATX mb using the following:

AMD Duron 800Mhz.
256MB PC-133 Micron SDRAM
Maxtor <> Max 30G. 7200 HDD
Pioneer 106-S Slot load DVD-ROM
Teac FDD
MS Win2K
YY-A101 Yeong Yang mATX Case w/
Enhance 145W SFX PSU

Sounds like this is somewhat of an over-kill system for your intended use, but I just wanted to respond to your inquiry about the 145W psu.
Actually with this system, you could watch movies while you are driving ......... plus have CD quality sound!

How about getting a high-capacity CompactFlash and using an CF->IDE adapter?

Much quieter than an old hard drive. Expensive though...

I've got a Duron 700 with HS/F, AOpen MK33, 512MB RAM, Matrox G200, 2 PCI NICs, PCI Modem, CD-RW, and 3 5400 RPM hard drives all in a MicroATX case with 145W PSU, been running that way for months and have yet to have any problems. Your setup should be just fine.

hey guys. thanks for the responses. all appreciated.

yeah, i agree the duron 800 is overkill, but i've got to source the parts and provide receipts for it, and the slowest duron about is the 800 at the moment.
As i say, this is a one use machine sitting in a corner indefinitely. I think it'll be okay with the duron800 and the mATX supply.

thanks again people...:)

I'm using a 1ghz Duron (not overclocked but unlocked to use 7.5x133), Soltec mATX mobo, WD 100gig 7200rpm, Pioneer 305S SCSI slotload DVD, Zip250, all with a stock YY102's 150W mATX PS.

I would suggest the Fong Kai FK-611L. The Case is a micro ATX minitower with the ability to support P4.

<< Mudboy, I was curious what kind of case you have all that in? I am in the market. Thanks >>

It's the CasEdge 1123. It's got 2 external 5.25" bays, a floppy bay (floppy slot in face plate, not full open drive bay), plus 2 3.5" drive bays (one below the left 5.25" drive bay, the other one is a bit tougher to find :) (it's on the far right side, I didn't notice it until I had the case for 6 months). Not a bad case, the cover can be a bit fidgety, but I'm pretty picky about my cases.

As an aside, has anyone ever seen the Chenbro PC303 in the flesh? Looks like a pretty sweet case
