No, the Asus A7V is not the best mobo for overclocking. If you have to get a new system this weekend, you'll want to get a MSI KT7 Pro2A, a Epox 8KTA2 or a classic Abit K7T. There are more possibilities, but those boards should be fine. You could also try looking for a board using the new KT133A chipset, but probably those aren't available yet.

About 800mhz Thunderbird versus Duron, both should overclock about the same. Reaching 1ghz is a good possibility with decent cooling. A Thunderbird of the same mhz will (arguably) be about 5 to 10% faster then the Duron. It's more expensive, of course.

i looked at the mobo forum for the new 133a mobo.
Abit KT7A - Available now.
Asus A7V-133 - ETA Friday 1/19/01
MSI K7T Turbo - ETA end of JAN 01'
i hear the msi k7t turbo is the hot item.
what to do, what to do.....ahhhhhhhh i think i should wait it out..huh

I think that you will have more success with a Duron, not neccessaryly an 800. The lower default votage on the Duron allows for a relatively higher voltage increase. 650 and 700 Durons can be bought for real cheap. Get the Duron and have fun. By the time your tired with it, TBIRDS will have dropped in price again.

I have the Duron 800 and the MSi K7T Pro2-a. Both are good choices for overclocking. I am running my Duron at 1007mhz right now. No stability issues or heat issues.
