Duron 800 OC'ing to 1000 ... please help

hi.
i have duron 800 (0631) and iwill kk266 mobo.
i just tried the pencil trick and it worked the first try.
however, i can't get it to over clock beyond 950.
it won't post beyond that with all different combinations.
did i just get a bad cpu?

iwill kk266, i thought this mother board can be stretched (fsb) to 168 mhz. i can only get it to about 120.... again, anything beyond that it won't post. not even at 5.0x133... is there something wrong with this motherboard?

one more question...,
when i took off the heat sink, from the cpu
i realized that the pre-applied thermal compound is ripped.
should i go out and buy a thermal compound and reapply?
if so?, is there a good website that'll show me how to do this?

my cpu temperature is at about 42 currently.

if any of you could help me out..., i'd greatly appreciate it. thanx.

I don't know your exact mobo specs but from posts i've read in these forums if you have a KT133 mobo then I the highest FSB speeds obtainable are roughly around 115 or so depending on how well the board is made. The K7T Pro 2A I just built does 106 FSB max and I've heard of other Pro 2's intitially hitting 112 or so and then after a good burn in only posting at 105 or 106.

Try boosting your CPU clock ratio in .5 increments above 8 first leaving your FSB at 100. Continue increasing till it won't post or becomes obviously unstable. When your CPU can't go any higher by clock ratio, then increase your FSB settings in the smallest increments available to get the system to its limit. Like I said I'm not familiar with your board so you might have to do some of these incremental changes through jumpers instead BIOS like on the K7T Pro 2 or some of the newer boards.

Good Luck!

Oops I nearly forgot. If you have thermal tape on your sink, and it sounds like you do, scrape it off, clean the bottom of the sink with degreaser, clean again with isopril alcohol, get some Arctic Silver Thermal compound, clean the center square die on the face of the CPU with the alcohol, apply a thin coat of the Arctic Silver to the square die, mount the cpu, mount the sink (there's a chore) and you should see temp's around 32 degrees celsius at system idle.

Good Luck again!

How about putting a fan on the chipset? All the new KT7A's have them. Maybe that would help. Anand's review seemed to suggest this.

Just a thought.
