Duron 800, KT7A, can't run 101 FSB

I am trying to overclock this computer, but it won't take it. I increased the FSB to 101/33 and it couldn't even run 3DMark 2001. When set to 100/33 it will run 3DMark 2001, and is totally stable. I tried it by setting it to "FSB 101/33", and I also tried setting it to "FSB 100/33" with "FSB Plus 1". Neither one worked. What is wrong? Thanks for any suggestions. Vielen Dank.

That's just wierd...

Just as a thought, try some other FSB settings, also, do you have the multiplier unlocked? If so, give it a try at 7*133 (933) and see what happens, b/c upping the FSB to 101 isnt going to do squat for performance anyway.

What kind of ram do you have?

Other periphials, etc?

I know it won't help performance, but i was just testing it out. I have not unlocked the multiplier yet. I wanted to see how high it would go on FSB first. The first setting I tried was 111/33, but it wouldn't run 3DMark 2001. Then I tried 106/33, still wouldn't run it. That is why I was testing it with 101/33. I do not see the point of unlocking the Duron at this point, due to the fact that I can't even run a 101/33 FSB. Also, I am getting a score of 2350 or so, on 3DMark 2001 as it is now.

My system consists of:
Abit KT7A
Duron 800 with CoolerMaster HSF
GeForce2 MX
Montego II(Vortex2) Sound Card
D-Link NIC
Maxtor 20GB Hard Drive
50x CD-ROM
Teac Floppy
128MB of Crucial CL2 ECC PC133
Enlight 7237 Case with 300W P/S

I would appreciate any help. I have never OverClocked before. I've seen similar systems running at 1000MHz+. Do I have to unlock the Multiplier in order for it to run stable? At idle my CPU is 27C & System 26C. I bought this as a MoBo, CPU, HSF combo from micropro.com. Did they screw me somehow? Also, when I take off the HeatSinkFan to unlock the CPU, do I have to apply thermal paste when I am putting it back on? Dank für Ihre Zeit.

Wouldn't boot at 133/33. I guess that 1064 is too high? I didn't think the RAM was being OverClocked, because it is 133, and I was only trying to run it at 101. Does anyone have the same MoBo? How did you OC?

Unlock your proc and see how high you can go w/multipliers, seeing that you are having some kind of instablity problem while oc'ing the fsb. Also, definitely re-apply some thermal goop when putting the hsf back on as the Athlon and Duron are hot running chips. Have you tried to raise your vcore volts? That might give you some stability. I have recently oc'ed 2 Duron chips, 1 is a 750 and 1 is an old 600 and both with run @ 950 with 1.8 volts vcore.BTW, I use the Arctic Silver thermal paste because it doesn't dry out and it might help on heat transfer a little.

I have the same board. Make sure "Speed Error Hold" is disabled in the CPU Setup menu. And close those L1 bridges🙂.

I know this may sound stupid, but how do I remove the HeatSinkFan? I tried, but couldn't figure out the mechanism, and am afraid or breaking it. When I was pulling on the HSF, the MoBo was flexing alot. I have a CoolerMaster HSF that has a big silver Heatsink with a flat metal bar running through though middle of it. I figure that the bar is the mechanism, but can't figure out how to operate it. Is there a special tool? If anyone can tell me how to remove this, thanks.

If you look at the clip(metal bar), it is catching on some hooks on the socket. What you have to do is push down on the clip a little and then use a screwdriver or needle nose pliers to unhook the clip from the socket. You should then be able to unhook the other side of the clip from the socket and remove the heatsink. You might have to pull the psu out of the case if it gets in the way while you are doing this; it's only attached to the case with 4 screws on the back of the case. You don't even need to unhook any of the power leads, just move it out of the way.

Dank. I just unlocked the chip. I am running at 850 reight now. I tried to put the multiplier to 6.5, but it wouldn't boot. It will boot at 8.5 and 9. Those are all that I've tried thus far. Is there a reason that it won't boot at a lower multiplier?
