Thanks for looking

I am trying to narrow down this problem to hopefully something other than the processor (which I bought here). I have

DFI AK74-EC motherboard (new bios)
256 megs Crucial Ram
Windows xp pro
Compusa 300 watt ps (yeah I know)

When I use my Duron 700 everything works fine

When I use the Athlon 1 ghz I get to the user chooser screen and I get a multicolor pixelated square
around the cursor and it locks up.

I tried 3 different cheapo power supplies and the same thing happens but at slightly different times.

I also tried a different video card and same thing happens.

I measured the voltage on the power supply and get a steady 5.04 and 12.05 volts.

Should I go out and buy a AMD approved power supply or forget about the 1 GHZ ?

Thanks
Steve

ecopure, if I read you correct the system will POST and load windows and lock at the logon screen with the 1 GHZ cpu. Have you checked in the BIOS setup to see if the FSB and multiplier are correct for this cpu?

Another thought if you can, try the cpu in a system that is working with one of that speed or greater.

I also add that these cpu's are power hungry!

CYLINDERMAN,

Thanks for the responce. My system and bios shows up as 100 x 10. I've tried 133 x 7.5 but it still posts with 100 x 10. I don't have another system to try this on (I have all intels). The part where it freezes is at the logon screen ONLY when I move the mouse. Another video card does the same thing. The motherboard website says it can take this processor but is says "100 mhz (200mhz ddr) fsb processors"
What's with the DDR?

Thanks
Steve

I also have a case coming in with an AMD approved ps--hope that fixes it

<< What's with the DDR? >>

Double Data Rate, AMD cpu use both the up clock cycle and the down hence 100mhz FSB =200MHZ DDR

In my past experiences a cpu either workes or it does not, but I have delt with this power problem. I learned my lesson the hard way, had all kinds of problems lock ups, constant errors, even formated and reinstalled OS several times. After good power supply not one more problem.

Keep posted:)
