Which on should works better?

I have a 450(256mb Win2k) on my Dell and just setup a Duron 700 (128mb Win98se, Biostar M7VKA ) and the Duron seems to be very sluggish when I give it too much work to do at a time. Do you think there is a problem that could be solved? With too much I mean Open ICQ and Winamp at the same time!

This was my first do it yourself computer thing.....so I am a little puzzled

Thanks

You have the VIA 4-in-1 drivers installed?

128MB of RAM is a little bit light, but it should be fine for Win98SE. Go into system.ini and add ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 under the [386Enh] section to force more efficient usage of system RAM.

No way I could call my duron 650 "sluggish", even multitasking. Check your setup, something isn't right. Try some benchmark utility to see if something sticks out.

I have both P3-450 @600 and Duron 600@900 - Duron soundly whips the P3-600 quite easily.

If the work you're talking about is stuff like webbbrowsing, Office etc, then you're likely to be limited far more by the harddrive and memory(128 is too little for heavy work IMO).
128 MB more and Win2K would do wonders for your more "serious" stuff, and like hans hinted, if the HD is slow, that will affect the speed considderably.

Check your HDD. Make sure DMA is enabled, and that the BIOS settings are correct.

Also, is the CPU running a little hot? My Duron 700 was very twitchy at 700MHz cos my HSF wasn't seated entirely correctly. Fixed that now with my FOP38 and cruisin at 900.

Something isnt right, even a 600MHz Duron should wipe the floor with that 450 easily.

These are my Wintune stats

The Video test froze the system!!!!!! If you have used wintune.......in the video test it displays numbers that go up till 99, but on mine it froze at 48, all 3 times.

Plus I think my HD is @5400, its pretty old and 8gig onl
y
Please advise.

Thanks
