I just ordered my MSI K7T Pro 2-A and Alpha PAL6035 cooler... now for the cpu.
Previous threads have led me to decide on the duron 700. I am hoping to overclock to 1ghz at least :)
What should I be looking for? OEM or Retail? What week? anything else specific ?

Thanks in advance for the help!

buy Oem- if you smoke it from overclocking, nobody will honor the extra warranty anyway.

The later weeks tend to be better, look here.

with a lot of resellers offering pre-tested CPU's, there are some chances you get a OEM CPU that failed the overclock test.

If you're serious about overclocking, go the OEM route. (Like GaryTcs said, the warranty will be moot.) Use the money you save to buy a decent heatsink/fan combo rather than depending on what comes with a retail CPU.

From every thing i've heard, the only durons that can get up to and beyond 1GHz are the 800's. I have a 700 get to 950, voltage maxed on a Asus A7V, and it choked when I bumped the fsb up to 101. The chip was cool as could be, just a limitation of the duron.

Whalen, You are mistaken my friend, My week 27 Duron 600 is currently at 1016 (9.5 * 107). It topped out at 963 with the L1 bridges just penciled in, but I got the extra mhz after using the Loctite conductive paint to close the bridges. Every CPU is different, but most Durons achieve at least 900mhz. Assuming that AMD does their testing of the Duron dies correctly, the ones with the best performance should be used for 800mhz parts, meaning that the 800's are more likely to hit 1 ghz. This has not been the experience of every forum member here though, some will tell you that the 600's are more likely to hit 1ghz statistically. I cannot dispute their experience, especially considering the performance of my Duron. I wonder as the manufacturing process is improved upon, if more and more Duron dies meet the minimum specifications for 800mhz, so are just labeled 600-750 to keep inventory up.
