Just installed my very first Duron 700 in a MSI pro 2a. running fine but temps(thru sisoft) show the cpu to be running 45-50 deg C. Have a chrome orb with 2 case fans. Took the thermal pad off the heatsink and used some (no flaming please) Radio Shack heat sink compound(silicone based). Didn't help much. Bumped up the fsb to 105 and with the cpu idle, it showed 60 deg c and still booted into windows 98. Did not like the temp that high so I dropped it back to 100. Sure seems like I'm doing something wrong with the temps that high but I dont know what.

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Don't use SiSoft readings. They are very inaccurate.
Use the PC Alert utility that comes with the motherboard CD, though, none of these are very accurate at all.

I have FOP32-1 with Radio Skack grease, according to PC Alert, CPU is 36C and Chassis is 33C.

Just to make sure. You did put the heat sink on the right way? There is only one way to put it on for it to seat properly on the CPU. The beveled edge on the bottom of the heat sink fits over the part of the socket you can see when looking straight down on the CPU.

My Duron 700 runs stable at 1083MHz on a KT7 mobo with a Cooler Master DP5-6H11 Heatsink/Fan and basic thermal compound. VIA's hardware monitor consistently shows my CPU temps to be 38C and system temps to be 23C.

I'm curious though: which Sandra module gives you temps?

Dan,

Both the mainboard and cpu+bios give you temps. With my FOP38 I read 42C at full load (Duron 800@1GHz/1.85v) but I suspect I'm running around 50C... won't know until I get my thermistor.

Subversal: Thanks! I'll check it out. I want to see how Sandra's numbers compaire with VIA's hardware monitor and the readings in my bios.
