Duron 700 Default Voltage is 1.70

seems kinda fishy - my new duron 700 chip only needed 1.6 volts in order for it to run stable.

did you buy the chip as a part of a complete system? if you didn't, plop it into your motherboard and set the cpu speed in the bios to auto-detect. if it comes up at a lower rated speed - then yes, you got crossed.

next step would be to take the chip out and examine the L1 bridges to see if it's been connected (either with pencil, conductive paint, or in any obviously "not put there to begin with" way.

last thing could be that you got a bum chip 🙁
 
This Duron is already in a MB that doesn't have any multiplier/voltage selection features (ECS K7VZA). I can't see the "voltage" bridges since Micropro places a warranty sticker over them. I'll remove the sticker later once the cpu has some operating time on it.

I was wondering if some Durons come from AMD with a 1.7 default voltage or if someone has already tested this one and didn't erase all of their pencil marks. If I think it has already been tested I may decide to open a different set of bridges when I attempt to overclock it.
 
if it's locked, it might be the motherboard that sets the voltage at 1.7 standard - not the chip. if possible, try to invest in a new motherboard (asus a7v or abit kt7 spring to mind) that allow full customizing of multiplier/bus speed/voltage in BIOS.
 
The chip ID etched on the core reads "D700AUT1B" which shows it should be a 1.6 volt 700 MHz Duron. I'll have to remove the warranty sticker to see which of the L7 bridges are closed. Maybe something on the sticker is providing a conductive path on the 0.1 volt bridge.

I would have chosen a MB with OC options but I wanted to upgrade as cheap as possible and like a challenge. This MB has had several good reviews which noted its stability and was about the cheapest on pricewatch. This MB/CPU with a Coolmaster HSF was $152 shipped.

I plan on modding the L6 and L4 bridges to change the multiplier to 9 and closing the L7 bridges to increase the voltage. This will give me a range from 900 to 1008MHz.
 
Modman, stay away from the L4 !! The Bridges you need to mod are the L6 (FID) and L2/L3 BP_FID. At 700 your L6s will look like this

I removed the warranty sticker and the L7 bridges are: "l:l:l." which corresponds to 1.6 volts. The MB must not be reading the voltage correctly or its voltage regulator is off.
 
Update on ECS K7VZA Board/700 Duron Combo:

Cut (actually scraped) two bridges (L4, L6) using an exacto knife (#11 blades, it took too long).
Closed one AMD cut L4 bridge with pencil method and got a post @ 900 MHz.

The reported voltage is 1.95 (all L7 bridges closed). It will post at 992 MHz, hangs up when trying any higher. I don't know if the core voltage is actually 1.95 or if the MB is incorrect in reporting. Next step will be to install OS.
