I just ordered a Duron 650 the other day, but the only reason why I got it was because I was Xmas shopping and I had a limit, and I also needed a hard drive. So I got the Duron 650, MSI K7T Pro2-A and a 45GB IBM Deskstar. But I really wanted to get a 1Ghz Tbird instead of a Duron cause I am not too big a fan of low end processors, although a Duron is pretty good. My were to just keep the Duron till I get the money for a 1Ghz... Now I just want to know what everyone would do if they were in my shoes, would you keep the Duron 650 and overclock it or go for the 1Ghz Tbird.

The latest pricing has made T-Bird 1GB very "Hot". The question is whether or not 1 - 1.2GB T-bird would be that much better than 900Mhz Duron.

Well, I got P-III 700@933 on Abit SE6, and I am ready to jump on the T-bird.

In reality, you would not see that much difference in every day life. Duron@900 - 950 is already more than fast enough.

If you get 1GB, you will be getting it just because it's 1GB. At least, that's the only reason why I will be getting it.

I think thats the reason most people get 1Ghz +, everyone knows there is not real time visible performance difference when using an overclocked Duron or a 1Ghz Tbird, but I will prolly have the 1Ghz to last me till next Xmas or so when another upgrade will be viable, so I wanna be able to settle with something good till then, thats mostly why I want the 1Ghz

Dynamix3D,

Don't worry. Regardless of you keep the Duron or get T-bird 1GB, they will come up with something else to make you feel that you need another upgrade way before the next X-mas.

yea thats pretty true. Well I guess I'll see how things run with my Duron 650 for a while before I make the jump to the 1Ghz Tbird. Sad thing is all this stuff is my Xmas gift and I have to wait till December 25th to open it =(

I would say check out how satisfied you are with the performance of the OCed Duron.

And also, wouldn't it be so much nicer if the people got you a computer for Xmas instead of just parts? ;) Guess someone has to put it toghether though. ;)

I put the computer together myself, I do noy like getting prebuilt computers. I think the best computer you can get is one that you build yourself. This way you know every aspect of the computer and can find out problems easier when they occur.

Have fun with the Duron. Theres really nothing to lose. By the time that you are bored with it, if AMD keeps dropping prices like they have been, 1gig BIRDS will be free with 2 boxes of Rice Crispies !!

I have both.
I like the TBird better. I play Tribes a lot and it is noticeable, the diference in heavy action from one to the other.
Here is a link to a couple of pictures I took of the L1 bridges closed if you need it.

I think you made a pretty good choice because you can always get the T-Bird later and the bonus should be a lower price for the T-Bird. When you get the T-Bird then you can sell off the Duron. Next week I'm also getting
a Duron 650 and my MOBO so I'm pretty excited about it. Could you do me a favor and let me know what you think of the MSI MOBO? Thanks:)

In the old days, you had to have the latest and the greatest just to run new applications.

However, nowaday, as long as you get 400Mhz or so for software decoding of DVD, everything above is nice to have. I find Celeron 566 to be fast enough to do pretty much anything. Well, it does not get you the best benchmark scores, but it plays all the games, applications, and so on.

Well, don't get me wrong. I have 933Mhz PIII and now I am looking at getting 1GB Athlon hoping to get 1.2GB out of it. For what reason? Well, we all know.

I actually now have both the 650 Duron and the 1Ghz Tbird on the way, I ordered both. I decided to go with the 1Ghz after all, but I was still anxious to overclock the Duron to see how much I can get out of it, but we'll see. I am definately willing to sell it tho, for $60 shipped, so if anyone is interested lemme know.
