My Duron 650 came unlocked. Why do they make some unlocked while most are locked? Right now it's purring along at 800. When I get my FOP32-1 and some Artic Silver I will steadily be jacking the speed up. This is great. Duron's rule!

Fanon, Can you post some details?
Is it OEM or retail?
what week chip is it?
where did you buy it from?

btw, I ordered a retail Duron 650 from lynncomp.com that should be here on Monday, maybe I will have the same luck :)

I just picked up an unlocked 700 from a little dealer here in my city. Only one he had, and the box had dust on it :)

I ordered the CPU (OEM) and board (KT7) from www.mwave.com as a combo. Check them out. They have what I consider good prices and they are a good company. I don't know what week it is. I was just so stoked to see the L1 bridges connected I didn't pay much attention to anything else. BTW, I was floored with just how small those friggin' bridges are. The pics I saw on the web don't really convey just how small those bad boys are! Thank God I don't have to muck with those things. I'd go blind and crippled if I did.

I know what you mean KB. Those friggin' numbers are tiny. The die itself is much smaller than I expected from a 25 million transistor chip. Anyway, can you tell what week it was made by those numbers? I know what the first line means (BTW, both of our chips are 1.5v core voltage -- I think they all used to be 1.6v), but the last two I don't know.

Fanon ... Your chip is a week 24 (ACAA 0024 XXXX) KB yours is a week 23. AMD is shipping quite a few unlocked chips in both the Duron and T-Bird lines. Theory is that it speeds up production. I think they are just looking for another thorn to stick in Intel's side. With Mobo's available that unlock the CPU there's really no point in locking them anyway.

Thanks for the info Wolfman35 & Fanon. I am building a new system for my kids, but I am in no hurry putting it together as we already have 5 computers in the house :Q Any recommedations for a motherboard? I was looking at the Abit KT7 & Asus A7V but have heard some good things about the Epox 8KTA+ and it's slightly cheaper than the other two.
