Greetings,

I just got around to putting my new system together and I'm having some difficulty with the stock AMD Heatsink/Fan that was supplied with my retail (buy.com deal) Duron 600 (week 29). I never really had problems installing heatsink/fan in the past but this is my first amd cpu which I hear is diffcult to work with. The problem lies in the fact that when I clip the short end to the lug, as is standard practice, the longer clip of the retension clip does not reach the lug on the "top" of the socket 462 logo. It just won't reach farther enough; not to mention that I have to exert a great deal of force to bring the clip even within close proximity of the final lug. I always end up giving up and not pushing it any harder because it just seems like I'm gonna chip the die. Ugh! I suppose I should also mention that the stock amd hs/f doesn't quite look like the one mentioned in the install manual. In the manual, the underside of the HS has a small sections which is raised to specifically mount about the "socket 462" side. The HS/F I have does not have suck a raised underside at all. My package was shrink wrapped and sealed so I don't think I'm dealing with any tampered goods. I'm really at a loss here as to how to in god's name install the damn HS/F. The cpu is flush and it went in smoothly into the ZIF socket a. Ugh! please help. TIA

Is this your retail hsf? If so there should be no problems. This does have a small notch underneath, just shift the hsf towards the 462 a bit and use a screwdriver to help push down. Might want to flex the clip before you try this. If all else fails just get pliers and bend clip outward. As long as you are absolutely certain that the hsf base isn't tilting, don't worry too much about the force is takes to get the clip on.

Actually your heatsink will be smaller than that one and it doesn't have a raised notch. That heatsink is for higher clocked Duron's and not the 600. I use a pair of pliers to clip it in place, just be carefull they don't slip off and damage anything and make sure the heatsink is flat on the chip when you try it.
