Can anyone refresh my memory but I thought I read somewhere in this forum about Athlon/Duron 800+ would lock up with GeForce 2 AGP? I am currently running my Duron 600 at 700mhz at 1.6v and is rock solid in all aspects. When I bump it up to 800mhz at 1.85v it runs Windows and any apps fine until I try a 3d intensive program such as games or some demos that came with my video card. Is there are setting I am missing or is this a overclocking setback?

System:
Duron 600@700 (100x7) 1.6v [Athlon Tbird 1ghz is waiting but I'm having fun tweaking the Duron since it came unlocked]
Abit KT7
Creative Labs Anilhator 2 MX
Creative Labs X-Gamer Live sound card
384 Megs Micron PC-133
40 gig maxtor 7200rpm ATA66
72x Kenwood Truex drive
Creative Labs PCI modem
2 NICs for sharing my DSL with my LAN

Most Duron's will overclock to 800Mhz at a voltage of 1.65 or less.
If your cpu absolutely needs the 1.85V to get to Windows, more than likely you simply have a cpu that wasn't meant to run that fast. Not all cpu's are created equal.
I have a 600 running at 800 now at 1.6V.
I had issues with it at 900MHz so I dropped it back down.

i have ther same problem with my D700@936 @1.85v. it works fine in Windows, but after a couple of minutes of a 3D game, it just crashes back into Windows, no errors or anything.

when it did that, i opened my case, and my GF2 chip was REALLY hot, so now i've bodged on the hsf (but fan don't work, +ve bit on wrong pin for mobo :() from my old K6-233, but i've yet to try any 3D games.

Thanks for the replies. I was racking my brain and thought I saw something about some odd bug with Abit KT7 and Geforce 2 mx on these forums. I must admit this is first time overclocking and it is addicting! Well, time to buy a better cpu heatsink and fan, and a defoster pen to unlock my Tbird 1ghz. Although I do want to tweak that Duron 600 for few more days.

Yeah, sure is! My Tbird is still untouched as I am determined to get this Duron 600 to play my games at 800mhz without locking up... might just have to buy another motherboard and case, hmmm, when's payday? And I did buy all Xmas gifts for everyone... hmmm?

Well, you didn't buy ME anything
But if you want to try a new setup, try a MSI Pro2A

Using pencil leaves it unstable. Use the defogger like someone else suggested. It will stabilize the cpu.

Well, my Duron came unlocked. It's week 24 and the L1 bridges are a nice shiny gold color, so I am pretty sure it's factory. That's what got me to tweak it, I noticed the bridges, it was just a "test" chip to get my Tbird system up and running as I shopped for 1ghz+ Tbird... hate to have all those pieces lying around... even though I do have enough machines to support a small school class... I hate to throw anything out after upgrading about every six months for several years (ah, the days of my first home built machine... 486DX2-50mhz.) Dang expensive hobby if look back at it... but I never tried overclocking until last week. Funny?

Update! I finally got it stable at 800mhz in 3d games! Just got through playing a good fifteen minutes of Unreal Tournament and Quake III with no lock ups or crashes... definitely notice the little extra speed over the basic 600mhz. Oh, the secret... a better heatsink and fan! Yeah, finally opened the case back up and replace the generic cooler. Still got to post it at 1.85v though. OK, OK, this was fun! Hmmm, time to tweak that 1Ghz Tbird!

I'm not partial to any chip maker. In fact I have two PIII's in my LAN that we use for gaming, 450 and 667. Just that I wanted to try Athlon's and Duron's since I hadn't bought one yet, overclocking is just a hobby. AMD prices justify the playing around with them. I rather have fun with a $50 chip than worry about frying $250+ chip, which seems to have the same performance.

Remember these forums are here to share knowledge, not to belittle or insult anyone.

first try to use a window defrost pencil on the L1 bridge and then turn down your voltage to working level. Those 600 durons go up to 1030 stable. Get a good heatsink and a blaring loud fan..Then insulate your case (><>><NOISE><><><)

Up you I/O voltage from 3.3 to 3.5 volts.

I had similar stability problems with 3d programs. Couldnt even get through 3dmark2000 using anything less the 3.5 volts while overclocking.

Thanks, but everything is pretty stable at 800 (100x8) at 1.85v. No lock ups in 12 hrs. No fires yet! Now to play with the 1ghz Tbird.
