Bought an older unused oem 600. Are some locked others not or is there a way to tell?

Yeah, just look at the L1 bridges. If they are connected then it is unlocked. if they are cut then it is locked. :)

I got the cpu and the bridges looked connected. I installed and booted up at 600 no problem with a fop32 on it. Ran fine at default and up to 105mz. I set to 6.5 and it boots up at 670mz fine but nothing more. Whats' the default voltage? The bios go up to 1.8 and temps seems to stay about 31.
Anything higher wont boot, have to turn off, let sit and then back on.

what's next? 6.5 must mean the multiplier isn't locked

MSI motherboard and 6.5 multiplier on 105fsb seems to be it. Have fop32 with 80mm fan and temp reported at 30c or less. No go at higher multipliers or fsb.
Anything else to be done?

The default voltage is 1.5v. you should be able to push it further say 800mhz. Something might be wrong with the mobo? Try setting it at 8x multiplier, 1.8v, and 100mhz fsb.

Tried different multipliers up to 9 and voltage to 1.8 with fsb at 100 but no go. Only does 6.5 at 105. Picked up an old stock unlocked 650 from a local store and when I wrote down the numbers noticed the corner of the core was chipped! Came bare in a piece of antistatic paper too. I didn't pick it up or I would have mentioned something then.
Bought it as new and it wouldn't even post!
Emailed them back and hope to hear soon. AMD's not much fun for me so far!

I think monotone meant to say, 1.6v is nominal for a duron. The specs are 1.5-1.7v. But all that aside, you might of unfortunately bought your duron from someone who had already gone through the bin and found those that overclock well and those that don't. AMD only guarantee's 600 from a 600, but there is big difference in actual chips. Most 600's would do at least 800 though. Have you tried a different chip in that mobo and parts combo? See if something else ain't limiting you? If not your chip is bad. :( But on the bright side it runs a little faster. :)

Some of the early durons (600 & 650) that was unlocked only gets 1.5v as default. The chips was designed for 1.6v, but i think amd changed it so it wouldn't be so easy to overclock be newbies.
I've never heard of a duron that couldn't atleast post at 800, but as WarCon said you might have a (very!) bad chip.
