Hello,

just got a new heatsink - Global Win FOP-32 ... and overclocked my cpu(Duron 600) to 980 (9.5x103 at 1.7V) my current CPU temp (consider it as almost idle) is 36C . Is it low/high/normal temp ? should I try and go higher , or than I would be in danger ?

p.s. my MB is Abit KT7-raid , both memories are PC133.

Thanks,
bye.

p.s. I am running Win2k if it's important

rc5/seti@home/prime95 will load your cpu. Games do to a certain extent, but often stress subsystems rather than pure cpu.

Let me see if I have this right, you are running a Duron 600 at 980 and you are not sure if you should try higher? I hate you AMD guys!!!! Just kidding.
If I were you (and I'm not) I would run the chip as hard as I could up to 1.75V or so and be happy. I may be stupid but everytime my system locks up (which is not very often) I always think that it is from my overclocked chip - maybe this is the error that caused Intel to label my chip a 700e and not a true 933). Silly me.

Did you unlock the L7 also. Take it to 1.85 and see what you get, my 700 is running great at 1050. Sound like you got a great OCer...

And could you tell me what's the normal IDLE Temp for a cpu ? ... so I won't burn my cpu... Thank you.

I'd run it up to 1.85 and see what is stable. Funny thing is that all these chips seem to have invisible overclockability lines. For example, you might be getting 980 @ 1.7 but you might not be able to get 1000 @ 1.85! I've seen a bunch of chips that were like that. They'd do 900 like a walk in the park but then take a BIG jump in voltage to go another 50 MHz. Whatever the case, sounds like you got a heck of a lot of CPU for the price.

BTW... are you cracking RC5 for Team AnandTech yet? A CPU cycle is a terrible thing to waste!

and what should I change now ? multiplier/bus speed ? ... like I said , I have 9.5x103 ...

Netopia: haven't tried cracking RC5 , but will soon ; )

there isn't a "normal" idle temp. Kt7's and a7v's use a compensation in an attemp to better "approximate" core temp. unfortunately, this also raises idle temp by the compensation number.

hmm ... i got it to work on 1Ghz and my idle temp is still about 35-36C : )) ... $80+$20(heatsink) for 1Ghz is not bad at all ; ) ... but wanna try to get more out of it ...
