Duron 1GHz running at around 50 deg C?

I'm not sure whether this is a motherboard issue, a CPU issue, or a cooler issue... Soooooo...

I have a Duron 1GHz CPU and an ECS K7S5A motherboard, the CPU is being cooled by an Alpha PAL8045 with a Sunon 40CFM fan blowing outward drawing air off per spec. Case temps are a regular 35 degrees or so, I have adequate case cooling. Ambient temps are around 30 degrees C, the thermostat is set to 69 degrees F, and our room is around 75.

Thing is, this CPU is running right around the 50 degree C mark, as reported by the BIOS, well, between 45 and 50. I find it rather odd, as I have a TBird 1.4GHz on an IWill KK266-R which runs around 45 degrees C under full load, and idles around the 41 degree mark.

Is this a sensor issue with the K7S5A, or does this CPU run hot?

And lastly, I'm fairly certain I have a good interface between the alpha and the CPU, though there were a couple capacitors that were actually in the way of one of the corners of the HSF. I wonder if those may be wedging a little gap on the CPU.

Arctic Silver II is the interface material. Good coverage I'm sure. And we're well past the break-in period on the AS2.

Everything is stable, but this just seems odd. Any ideas or comments?

My K7S5A reports that my duron 800 @ 933 with a pal8045 (which I've taken off and reapplied multiple times) is ~50c under load. Only a bit lower like 45 when idle. I was thinking maybe its the mobo?

Your temps between the Duron/Tbird can't be compared due to the different mobos reading with differing accuracy.

Here's the lowdown: If your system is stable, you don't need to worry about your temps.

I hear what you're saying here... the thing is I was wondering if this is normal or not. I understand about the different mobo issue, but I'm figuring that if the Alpha can keep a TBird 1.4 nice and cool, then I could take my 1GHz duron to 1.33GHz without having to worry about cooling issues (after all, 1.3 durons are around, so it shouldn't be that much of a stretch, and on top of that, the only OC options I have with this mobo is 1.33GHz.

Different motherboards read temps differently. THe KK266-R with your 1.4 T-bird reads among the lowest out of any motherboards.

In addition

Overclocking a duron is different then overclocking a t-bird or even running a t-bird at stock. A duron has a much smaller contact surface, which does effect the cooling efficiency of a heatsink.

I've had two K75SAs. I have a Athlon 1.4 Ghz on one at the moment and it runs at 46 degrees under full load. I had an XP 1600+ and never got it over 44 degrees. Neither CPUs are/were overclocked and using a SK6 with a low noise Panaflo. Only 24cfm I think... I'll have a 1Ghz Morgan Duron arriving in the next day or so. If you still can't figure out why you're running so hot, email me and I'll tell you what temps I run with the 1Gig Duron.

Hmmm...I don't have the exact same setup but with my Duron 1G and alpha 8045 HSF, my temperature is usually around 35c....I got this reading off the Bios, but the real temperature is abit higher maybe around 40c.....however after I cracked one of the corner on the cpu die...the temperature went up a bit.....one other thing that might affect the cpu temp reading is the location of the temp probe....I think most of the mobo manufacture place the cpu temp probe right under the cpu socket, so the temperature measured is not the actual temp of the cpu because the heat was disspated from the die of the cpu which is the top, not the bottom.....but I think as soon as the temperature stay under 60c it sould be ok....

I have exactly the same setup. According to MBM, I'm running 27C case and 43C CPU at 124 FSB!! This is in a nice, big roomy Antec 1030b BTW (I love it!!). Before I hooked all my fans up in the case my case temp was in the lower 30's and my CPU temp was closer to 46-48c. Get yourself a copy of chfsb, that way you can adjust your fsb to 112, 124, or 133. Mine is not stable at 133. Seems like the instability @ 133 is due to memory for some reason...
