Duron 1.8 - Hot or fairly cool?

I bought a FalconRock II (by Spire / Masscool) based on the recommendations of many here at Anandtech. I lapped the bottom, etc... and somehow I broke my XP2100+ CPU. I'm looking for a cheap replacement and the Duron 1.8 fits the bill. How hot does the Duron 1.8 run?

I put the Falcon Rock II on a Duron 900 and right upon bootup, CPU temp spiked to 45C.
 
duron is a small die, most any basic cooler ought to keep it cool... i ran one with a old orb cooler... it's a small cache chip, runs about as cool as any... should be cooler than the 2100... duron 900 is an old tbird core, i think, bigger core, higher voltage...
 
i have the same heatsink running on my palomino, i used to have a duron 1.8 and it ran at 44 idel 51 load...

Your question and matching answer amounts to one of the usual "it depends" (in this case on what core a Duron has). The Thunderbirds were the last AMD cpu's before the numbering system changed to reflect performance, not speed, and they ran HOT, so if in fact a Duron is also running that core, it will not be as cool-running as newer Durons. But 45 isn't "high" in terms of AMD Socket 462.

What you need to remember, in case you forgot, or never paid attention to, is that a Duron 1800 and an XP 1800 are different animals, and have different sized L1/L2's, so the XP is more powerful, no matter that it runs more slowly. The last Socket 462 production was last June or July, and was Semprons. Durons went out of production 2-3 years ago, so a new one, still NiB, will be a rarity.

I thought the Duron 1800 was 1.8 GHz? The substrate appears to be the same style used on the XP2100+ (1.7 GHz). The Duron 900 (900 MHz) I have uses the ceramic substrate, similar to the old T-bird 1.4 GHz Athlon I used to have.

My motherboard doesn't take Semprons or anything new, but it appears to max out with a Barton 2600+ or a Duron 1.8 (circa 2002/2003).

CPUs don't seem to get much cheaper over the years either. I'm just trying to salvage this PC - it otherwise works great. I have another rig for gaming, and I'm planning to build a new system next year dedicated to gaming.
 
Thanks everyone! I checked AMD's tech docs and it turns out the old 1.4 and the XP2100+ have about the same thermal power (65-70W) while the Duron 900 has only 38-40W, and the Duron 1800 is 50-57W.
 
I put a Duron 1.8 in my parent's computer when it came with a motherboard for cheap from Fry's. It runs very cool. I believe the Duron 1.8 is the Applebred core which is a much more efficient design than your old Duron 900. At first I put a cheap 60mm HSF on there and that kept it plenty cool (under 40C), but was too loud. It's now running with an 80mm HSF and it's really cool now.
 
I know its old technology but I was surprised at the Duron. I actually installed one last night in a new (for him) compter for my dad. He's just discovered MP3s so this machine is state of the art for him 🙂. Anyway it seems like a real solid CPU and runs real cool. I'll check the temperatures within Windows later today but the bios was reporting 66-68F after 2 hours of instaling Windows 2K and updates. Granted I used my old Zalman, heavier than a powersupply heatsink/fan combo (CNPS7000 I believe) so I would hope it would keep the tiny core cool.
 
Yep! Sandra's CPU arithmetic bench puts my Duron 1.8 at the same level as a XP2200+, and knowing Sandra's scores, it should be about a 2300+ level.

It only runs at a max of 10*C above ambient system temperature.
 
Considering that for only about 50 bucks more, you could get a new Socket 754 motherboard and a Sempron 2600 (which I think beats the Athlon XP 3000+), I wouldn't bother with a Duron unless you really don't want to spend much getting it up and running again.

I got my Duron 1.8 for $58.
I'm scavenging parts to build a new PC for my dad. I'm about to throw out 2 or 3 old systems that are just too old to be of any use. The last thing I need is a brand new budget PC. My "budget" PCs are just old hand-me downs from gaming rigs 🙂
 
and as i recall the duron 1800 clocked up to 2.2 pretty easily... not as good as those amazing xp1700's, but not bad overall for a cheap chip...
 
I'll be happy if it runs reliably at 1.8 GHz.
My DUron 1.8 seems to be picky with its RAM. I put in several sticks of DDR and the PC would refuse to POST, or it POST's and hangs at the RAM check. I plop the same sticks into another Abit AMD mobo and it runs fine. I found out I can only use one stick of RAM in the Duron system and it's a 256MB Crucial PC2100. I can try buying another stick of RAM to try but I'm not wasting any more money.
