Duron 1.6 Cache enabling

I was interested in attempting the L2 cache mod and turn it into a 1900+. I've heard something to the effect of this not really working on post week 40 chips, but I was wondering if anyone could confirm that? Also, any tips / experiences with this process are most welcome.

I modded my bro's 1.8, makes it an xp2200 now. Works fine. Dunno what week it was though.

If anyone has some info, please let us know! I have a 1.6 Duron and have just overclocked it to run at 2.0 🙂 Can I have it overclocked and have the L2 cache enabled??? I don't think that it should be a problem but I just wanted someone to confirm it. Oh, btw, the link above to that guy's page where he enabled the L2 cache, can a pencil work or do I need to buy a special compound?

What that idiot obviously used was a "rear window defroster repair kit", available at AutoZone for $10. It's conductive, and it's that tan color, whereas "windshield repair stuff" is clear and does not conduct electricity.

Wait, I just thought of something. What's the point of doing this in the first place? A 1.8ghz Duron costs $39 at newegg. Add the $10 for a conductive pen or a defroster repair kit, and you've now spent what an Athlon XP1800 costs. The Athlon doesn't need to be modded, and will overclock to a higher (better performing) fsb, because of it's slightly lower multiplier. And even better than that, for $67 you can buy an XP2400 Thorton, which is nothing more than a Barton with half of the cache disabled, exactly like the cache has been disabled on the Durons. For anyone interested, here's the link showing how to "convert" your Thorton into a Barton: link.

edit: Oops, all of those prices are from newegg, so obviously newegg is where you can get a 2400 Thorton.

Frys sells duron mobo/cpu combos for under $40. Just use a pencil, I did, no need to buy anything else.
