throws off 46.1W at peak, but it'll be running FTP and Ventrilo on knoppix in its most demanding applications.... I want to make it as quiet as possible... Think I'm safe removing the fan from the heatsink?

btw... never worked with a stock AMD heatsink before.... is noise even that much of a problem with it?

AMD's retail fans differ. If you have the one you were thinking about using, then plug it in and see how much noise it makes. I'm pretty sure passive cooling of a 1GHz Duron is beyond the abilities of any retail AMD heatsink without a fan of some kind. Running the fan at 7 volts might be a nice compromise, however (ground its black wire to the +5V wire from the PSU, the red one on a typical 4-pin drive plug).

Don't do it. I've seen many Athlon/Duron systems come in for repair because of problems with lockups and often it is due to a dead or dying fan. This doesn't mean you can't have a quiet system. $15 can get you one of a variety of CPU coolers on the market with 80mm fans on large aluminum heatsinks with copper cores. Just undervolt the fan and you'll get your low noise without risking overheating.

My daughter has a 1.0 GHz Morgan core Duron in her system and it throws off a surprising amount of heat. For noise reduction, I simply went with a Speeze heatsink/80mm fan combo. 'Bout $10 for the pair. Nice and quiet, cools better than stock and was cheap.

you cannot run that CPU fanless, especially with the retail HS
but it should be pretty quiet honestly. I'd just use the stock HSF (fan included)
