during games, Windows goes to desktop every few minutes

First, it is not alt-tabbing, it is going straight to the desktop. I does it even when I am paused and not clilcking/typing only.

Win XP, all the latest patches. All the user processes except the game and taskmanager are closed. It happens every 5 minutes or so. Now, after alt-tabbing back into the game, the sound gets steadily worse (high pitched whine from speakers). CL Audigy 1

You probably have something running that is wanting your attention, outlook does this for the calendar. You could have any number of spy wares that cause popups, or any other programs on your computer that is causing the problem.

Download adaware, run the updates then do a check on your system. Go to start>run>Msconfig and get rid of anything you don't need that is starting up with your system as well as making sure nothing useless is in your start>programs>start up folder. Also it may be a good time to uninstall any un-needed programs.
