Duplicating contents of one HD to another

My IBM 60GXP 60GB is having problems powering up fast enough to be recognized during boot-up, so I RMA'd it with Dell for a replacement (presumably for the same model). How do I copy everything from my old drive (incl. all the partitions) to the new one? Should I put them on different IDE channels? Thanks

i havent actually done this before i always ended up just fresh formatting, but i am pretty sure you can use norton ghost

There are a few softwares that will do that for you, Norton's Ghost, Powerquest's Drive Image, amoung others. Many HD makers, like WD and Maxtor offer some free software for setting up the HD that also has the option to copy over entire parititions-plus it is free. If you have a Maxtor or WD plugged in on that PC anywhere you get download it for free and it will work great.

( I am also selling Norton's Ghost at the FS page if your interested-it is a great backup tool also.)

I've used Norton Ghost many times, and it works great. As for what channels, I'm sure there is a performance difference, but it doesn't really matter. You can put both drives on the same channel, or one on the primary and one on the secondary. The important thing is to get the data off to the new drive.

I've used cloning software by Maxtor and Western Digital for new drives by both those vendors. Both work well, and assign partitions in size proportional to the size of the new drive.

Norton Ghost also assigns partition sizes proportional to the size of the target drive (assuming you image the entire source drive).

If you wish to manually assign new partition sizes on the target drive, I'd use FDISK/FORMAT to manually set up new partitions and then use Norton Ghost image files of each discrete partition to populate the newly-sized partitions on the new drive.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your responses.

I can't find any ghost software on IBM's site. I thought there was a feature in XP to do this, but I guess I'll just do a new format. That Norton Ghost sounds interesting. Thanks anyway 🙂
