Duplicating a Cable line signal??

Ok, I'm building a computer for a friend and buying a hub for him. He just told me that there is a new $200 router or something like that, that you can buy that should split the signal of Road Runner Cable without weakening it. Supposly, with a normal router it splits the signal for you, so that you can use 2 comps at once. Which of course, would lessen your max connectivity speed right?? How would you built a router that Doesn't lessen your max connectivity speed. Sorry, never really looked into how Routers and stuff worked. Can anyone give me some help on what my friend is talking about?
