duplexing > mirroring?

I create alot of video content on the side and my normal PC just doesn't have the harddrive space to hold everything, plus I'm concerned about fault tolerance. I was thinking about building a file server to store all my files on it since my PC doesn't have any room for a RAID setup inside.

Now, from my A+ knowledge it was stated that a RAID1 setup with duplexing (two HDD controllers) will give you better performance then mirroring (one HDD controller). I'm just curious if this is ture for real workd performance?

Also, would you say a RAID1 setup with two SATA HDDs using NCQ (Maxtor Diamond 10) would be perfect here, or would I just be wasting money and I should just go with normal IDE HDDs?

Thanks in advance!

Normal set up make most sense for your application assignment.

Duplexing more for availability than performance where owner has secondary cost concern!

"RAID-1 with duplexing" does not exist. RAID-0 is the striping form of RAID which yields better STR figures.

Besides, you don't need fast drives at all, unless you have a Gigabit network. Otherwise, you're limited to ~12Mb/sec.

RAID-1 with duplexing is only useful on mission-critical server where the (very low) risk of a drive controller, or drive cable, failing are unacceptable. If your server is of such importance, then you'll probably also choose hot-swappable PCI cards so that the failed controller can be swapped out without a reboot.

Duplexing is unnecessary for most business servers, so it seems unlikely to be useful for your purposes.

Hey guys, thanks for the comment I appreciate it. Yeah, it's not going to be on a Gigabit ethernet just yet. I'm going to upgrade my home's network infastructure around christmas for Gigabit, but that's a ways off.

Thanks guy, I appreciate it.
