E6600, and its because it has a higher multiplier.

there should be an unlocked E6800K either out now or coming out soon on LGA775. thats the overclocking dual for you.

also o/c potential depends on your cooling, but i think the G31 will limit you the most.

The E6600 4MB looks a great buy @ 80 sterling?

The E6800 you mention is already available in EU for 85 sterling shipped?

Am I missing something on your September release note?

Are you saying I should wait and the E6800 will drop end of September?

the 6800 was released a few weeks ago but it isnt in many stores yet. most stores in the us will get stock around sept 20. its clocked a 3.33ghz and priced nearly the same as any other 6000 series pentium so you might as well get the 6800

How would the E6800 2MB 1066 perform on my board G31M-ES2L against an E6600 4MB 1066 ,both are priced the same? Seems a nobrainer to go for the 4MB?

Isn't the 4mb version of the e6600 a conroe? I have the E6600 wolfdale in my wifey's box it's 2mb and easily hits 4ghz with a little nudge. I didn't think those conroes hit anything above 3.6 without tremendous cooling. Even though the conroes have 4mb, the core improvements on the wolfdale made it better clock for clock.

Those are two completely different classes of chips. the 4MB E6600 is a conroe, the 2MB E6800 is a wolfdale. And the E6800 has a much higher clock speed. Get the E6800.

That E6800 should easily hit 4ghz on air. It's already 3.33ghz so you dont have much to go to hit 4ghz. I'm sure some people will hit 4.4+ on that chip

Guys, he has a G31 chipset. Most of those dont even overclock.

Buying the best stock CPU is the only sound advice I would give.

Nope.
They are releasing Pentium SKUs (was Pentium Dual-Core).
The cheapest Core i based processor is the Pentium G6950 at $100.
The E6700 (Pentium, Wolfdale based) is also $100 and the most expensive Core 2 based processor, but it's not an actual Core 2. That lineup then extends down.

if you dont overclock get a e6600 and call it a day.

if you want to overclock, with that board you listed, i would raise an eyebrow to the 6800K like others have said, if your mainboard can set the CPU multiplier, you will get the best you can out of that new chip.

I've overclocked E5200, E7500, and E8400 cpus on both Gigabyte and Asus G31-based mobos with no troubles. I didn't shoot for crazy high clocks, but they all functioned very well.

There is nothing much to read about it. Just ramp up the FSB, fix the PCI-E to 100 and fix your memory to highest possible value. Increase cpu voltage slightly and give it a try.
Bottomline, the G31 has so crappy memory controller that the extra GHz would be crippled by high memory latency and low speed...
But you can try it anyways
