Turbine's much-anticipated MMO, "Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach", is now opening up its stress test to Fileplanet subscribers. The registration is free, and it is a great opportunity for MMO and D&D fans to sign up and try out the game! Paid subscribers get a higher-rez client, but if you're curious about what DDO has to offer (and by all accounts, it's a lot) this is your chance to see it early."

From their website:

We are very pleased to announce that we will be running another Stress Test Event for Dungeons & Dragons? Online: Stormreach? in conjunction with IGN and FilePlanet!

The Dungeons & Dragons? Online: Stormreach? Stress Test is available to all registered FilePlanet members, with or without a paid subscription on Tuesday, December 13 through Saturday, December 17. FilePlanet members with a paid subscription will have access to the exclusive high-resolution client. Members without a paid subscription will have access to the standard client.

On Friday, December 16, from 6pm EST until 10pm EST, we will be running a special Stress Test event. During this event players will have a chance to win a spot in the regular DDO Beta! More details about this event will be posted later this week.

The Stress Test Event will run on different servers than the regular Beta. This allows us to test our servers without affecting our metrics collecting on the Beta server.

Read the PCG review. There's a code for the Beta in it as well. Bleh. Man, this entire game will be instance based. Nothing at all even pretenting to look halfway like anything related to innovative. Sounds like a PvE-only Guild Wars.

Doin't forget that Turbine will also be putting LOTR Online next year or so. Holy chopshop, Batman!

Amazing, it isn't quite as terrible as I thought it would be. Although it does remind me way too much of Guild Wars. I can't see myself paying $15 a month for this.

I've tested it for a while now (over a month anyway). It is pretty much totally instanced, aside from the parts of the city you can get to once you 'unlock' them via a quest. So, the city feels like a prison, and there is no free exploring. :(

It can be fun enough if you have a good group all the time, but I still like more freeform exploringl

I hate to be anal, but that was a preview...not a review. Also, that code isnt a sure shot into the beta -it was a lottery (that I didnt win either :( )

I've been in DDO Beta for a few months. Granted I only play it off and on. From what I've experienced through my levels isn't enough to pay $15/mo for. As of right now I'll definitely skip this game on release. I'm still playing the beta when I have a chance, in hopes that things improve.

Instancing is an idiotic way to design an MMORPG.
I am glad Vanguard and I believe Warhammer Online will not make extensive use of instancing.

Instancing is an idiotic way to develop mmorpgs most of the time, but I actually believe DDO is where it fits. It allows them to make a dungeon that a rogue can sneak through and get credit for. Why? Because killing monsters != experience, completion of objectives does. This is a really unique approach to instanced dungeons and one that I think may be "done right" but that every game shouldn't do. I'm withholding my judgement right now on how this game might turn out, the 10 very long levels kind of hurts.

Well, i've spent a few hours in the game now, and i have to say i'm VERY VERY disappointed. I played P&P AD&D many many years ago, and was hoping this would bring back some of the feelings of those times... but it doesn't. It doesn't even feel like an MMO either. It's VERY much like Guildwars, except maybe a bit better. I'm sure Turbine groaned and cursed when Guildwars was released, because they beat them to the punch but also didn't require a subscription.

Instancing is the best current way to make a honest attempt at a table top RPG experience. If you look past the PVP in Guild Wars there is quite an amazing story that actually does hold its weight in the RP realm. Many D&D players do infact love this [Guild Wars] game and their system. Infact, the only lacking part for a D&Der in Guild Wars is the inability to be a true DM.

D&D online to me is a meh knock off of Guild Wars. The savign grace is its name and probably a more indepth item system that will be installed because of the lack of a strong PvP element. However, I do think this game [DDO] will be large hit with D&D fans around the world. But for 15 bux a month I would rather play WoW.

Sure, but it was like a 10 page "preview" with tons of pics and details. That actually makes it worse for them since previews, including this one, are always very optimistic but even their rosey portrait of the game left me with with less than zero interest.

not sure why people like pvp in MMO's so much. I can understand in an FPS, but MMO's the only thing PvP brings is griefing... if nobody is griefing, the pvp doesn't do a whole lot to enhance the game. I know it's only IMHO, and others obviously feel differently... i've just never understood the big appeal to certain people for PvP in MMO's. I prefer PvE for this genre.

And I've been in the beta for DDO for the last couple of months and I have to agree with the things the previous posters wrote... I won't be paying for it at release though it does have appeal to the hardcore Pen&Paper players.

It's so gay how all the taverns are not open, you have to open the door, wait for it to load, then go in. Then they make it worse by teleporting you outside the tavern after you complete a dungeon. Oh and lets not forget about the human /dance emote. I know it has nothing to do with gameplay but, What.....The..... Fvck. Dancing like that in front of monters is just asking to get beat up.

God enough with the mmorpgs ffs.. so they'll be more games then there are players.

Yeah, funny, but that is what people said about WoW.

Griefing aside, there is nothing about combat between classes and characters that falls outside the definition of an MMORPG. DAoC's realm-oriented battles are a blast, but on the other hand I hate the FPS "gank guild" mentality that always turns up.
