Dungeon Siege crash

I have:

566 Celeron @ 850mhz
384megs of RAM
Abit BX6 2.0
ATI Radeon 8500LE 64meg

and the game crashes 100% of the time I play. It could be 30 minutes into the game, or it could be 2 minutes into the game. Whenever I load a Quick Save, the game crashes and it has to send an error report to Microsoft.

Anyway, what could it be? I have uninstalled and reinstalled my computer, formatted my hard drive... I was afraid it might even be a temperature issue (my motherboard was hovering around high-50's C.. who knows what my CPU or video card was running at), so I bought a small fan that brought my motherboard temp down to 27C.. I used it and it still crashes

I have installed the latest version of Win2000 (all service packs), I patched Dungeon Siege.. I am very frustrated as I have been looking forward to playing a game (last game I played seriously was Diablo 2), and Dungeon Siege seemed to be the perfect game for me... except for this. Any ideas?

did you remember to update your video card drivers?

and what about good ol' directX?

If that doesnt work, I dunno what to tell ya, except reformat and reinstall Dungeon Siege.

Try clocking back down to 566 and playing for a while. It'll be slower, but maybe your process just isn't 100% stable.

Installed the latest Catalyst drivers
also installed DirectX 9.0

and to hell with normal clocking 😉

I went googling and found that the most likely problem is a corrupt file. A quick fix is to just copy the file from the CD to the game directory. I hope that works

btw, I already reformatted and re-installed everything.. same problem

ok.. I took out 128 megs (two 64 meg sticks) and the game stopped crashing, but it will randomly reboot now.

This only happens in the game. It's not a heat problem as I have a personal tornado fan blowing directly in my computer, with the source being an open window with cold air outside

any other suggestions?

hmm.. I think I found the problem out. it's the heat..

whenever it locks up, I notice my CPU heatsink running kinda hot... a lot hotter than at idle.

We'll see what a gorb can do

How hot does it get? I have a Celeron 566@850 using a Gorb at home and the heatsink only gets warm.
