DUN not working after upgrade from Win2K to XP

Custom box from a local shop. ABIT KT7RAID, Athlon 900 TBird, 786 RAM.

I upgraded my W2K Pro to XP Pro. I used to have 2 Dialup Connections and they have disappeared from the network Connections window. When I tried the Wizard to make new ones, I find the Dialup Networking options are all grayed out.

I tested the Modem in Modem Properties\Diagnosis and it seems ok. The phone line has dialtone (we use pcAnywhere at work to connect to customer sites and I have it at home, too. That's how I discovered it was down - I tried to connect to one this morning and got -"There is no dial tone")

All I can think is there was some point in the upgrade where I was asked How Do I want to Connect to the Internet? And Dialup was an option but I have broadband so I selected that. Maybe DUN is no longer installed?

I also just noticed - not only is the dialup grayed out, also the "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password" is grayed

This is in both Connect to the Internet\Internet connection and Connect to the network at my workplace, where the VPN option is gone too

I had this happen before and it was a service not starting and it needed to be set to automatic. Check your services for Remote Access something or other (sorry don't have detailed info). Also make sure your NIC and Modem show up ok in device manager.

I'm at work now, I can check it at home. But I looked at my machine here (also XP) and the Remote Access Connection Manager is Started but set to Manual. Curious - if it's manual how did it get Started? Maybe when I did a dialup earlier this morning that called it and it's been Started since.

Hats off to you!

I tried it here, setting it to Disabled and rebooting. All the Connections disappeared from Network Connections, same things grayed out. Set it back to Manual and reboooted, they all reappeared. Thanks a bunch!

Sometimes it's like this I guess

At home I set Remote Access Connection Manager to Auto and rebooted, it still didn't start. I know that some Services have Dependencies. For this one it needed Telephony, which in turn depends on Plug and Play and Remote Procedure Call. All those are running.

The error message says "Access denied"

It is set to logon at System Services level. So I guess I can't start it manually even with the Dependencies running OK, I am logged on as Administrator.

Something else is missing!

Well, I thought I was good. After rebooting, Remote Access Connection Manager was started in Services, and the grayed options were enabled again, but now !!!

I try to connect and get No Dial Tone !!!

I have dialtone if I plug the cord into a phone, or the modem in my laptop. I know which hole in the modem to use. The modem works in Properties\Diagnostics, it shows OK in Device Manager.

What in the world???!!!
