Dumster diving..

Was walking the dog last night, saw a comp. in the trash so I dig it out
and take it home, it's a P4, 1.7ghz, intel mainboard, DVD ROM ,CD-rom
burner 256mg RAM, ATI 7200 vid card. Power it up and it works fine, just
bought a used drive in fs/ft and boom! I've got a working system..

Haha, nice. Seems kind of silly to throw stuff like that away. It's not the latest and greatest, but would be awesome if donated to a low income family or something. Does the salvation army take computers?

What do you plan to do with it? Folding box?

Use it for a torrent box or a music server or something. Just toss a bit more memory in there and it's fine.

I'm gonna give it to my mom or donate to a local charity, trying to find some cheap Rambus memory
on E-bay first to boost it to 512K. There was a dust CARPET on top of the CPU heatsink that I blew off,
probably overheated the CPU and caused lockups..

Sounds good man, nice work. Fewer heavy metals in the landfill and a system that somebody will be able to get good use out of. 😉

You'd be surprised at what people throw away...

I found a (then) 2 year old Compaq in the trash in our neighborhood, took it home, fired it up and was just spyware infested. What's worse is I'm sure if I delved hard enough I could find a lot of personal info of the person, since the drive was still intact and everything. I formatted it and it's now sitting in my basement as a file server / PBX box. 🙂

Even if the Salvation Army doesn't, most communities tend to have some sort of program to donate computers to low-income families.
