Dumping LM--Looking for well run DC program

I have been running LM for the last several months and very quickly moved up the points scale and was really enjoying the project. It now seems that there are some major issues at the project that are not or can't be dealt with because of money or staffing or whatever. The program in its current state sucks and I think doubtful that it is doing anything other than taking its last breath of air. I've spent way too much money on a cruncher to sit back and let it collect dust. So, until LM shows signs of not going under and runs a real project that appreciates it users, I'm looking for a well run problem free DC project. SETI seems a little to out there for me, but other than that I'm open. Something listed under this sites sciences/life sciences seem most interesting so far.

I've been running Folding@Home for quite a while and have never had a problem with it. TAS is also a fine choice, great group of guys.

Hi leconc!

TA Sentinel is a great way to find out about other projects. You get a vote on which project to do next. One month stay and then move on to the next project. Current project is TSC, looking for cures for childhood diseases.

Hello, I crunch for D2OL, searching for disease cures. Read here ---> D2OL home We have an active user base and Geoffs has a stats site up for us. We could use some help as several members have left or just don't crunch for D2Ol anymore. Either way and for whatever project you decide to work on, make sure you join TA, Team Anandtech.

May I humbly throw out a suggestion that you check out Folding@Home. There's a thread of links to resources that you might find useful if you want to look into Folding@Home some more. Note that since that thread was last updated, a new version of the F@H has come out, with the CLI (the one that runs in a DOS window, Command Line Interface, as opposed to the Graphical User Interface - GUI - version that sits in the system tray and displays pretty simulations when you click on it) being able to be installed as a Windows NT Service (in NT4, 2000, XP, and 2003 Server) without any helper programs like FireDaemon. 🙂

Is there a list anywhere of how many active members are in each DC program. I like Folding@ but it seems to have massive #'s of crunchers already. In Folding@, can someone give me a rough estimate on how the points system works and average wu's a day. I know it varies a lot, just a rough explanation please.

I go by points per day average. WUs vary from six per day to one in three days, depending on computer speed. The longer a WU takes the more points it is worth. hmmm... a 1 Ghz PIII gets around 50 points per day average.

It may seem like there are lots of active members in F@H, but it is one of the lower ranked projects for TeAm AnandTech. This great TeAm should be higher in the ranks in F@H!

As you can see, there are some dedicated people in TA F@H and TAS watching the forum for people looking for advice. They are hoping to add support to their favorite cause by being helpful 🙂

That sounds to me like an excuse just to get out of LM without saying that you're quiting. The client and servers have been running very stable and have not been having any problems. What is it about the program that you say sucks? I have over a dozen computers on this project and have not been having any problems.

Lifemapper is still going strong here and lately I haven't had any problems! So anybody reading this thread, don't be discouraged, LM will carry on and TA will make it to the top!

For another TA project I suggest Distributed Folding

leconc, Unforgiven,

What is off-track about the program? Like you, I would prefer not to crunch useless data when there are so many other projects that need help. I switch projects every few months and don't tend to keep up with the problems of each project. As this is my chosen project for the next few months, I would like to know the status of Lifemapper.

moltres, there has been staff turnover at the project over the past 2-3 months and for a few week span their servers were having issues with staying online and they didnt seem to have the knowledge to fix them. currently im having no issues and i love the project. i was just agreeing with leconc in that there have been reasons to get frustrated but as of late things have been well as far as i can see. the LM client itself is the most stable client for a DC project that ive ever used and ive never had any issues with that. the only problems ive ever seen is the inability to send/receive new work (but that is what a cache is for after all) and their database getting clogged up with back results. i love this project and im not going anywhere, just thought i would post and try to give leconc some options as to which direction to go. no one wants to feel as though their efforts are going for not and that they are wasting idle cpu time by having no work to crunch. thats the impression i get from leconc's post that he's fed up and just wants to contribute to something that will be more stable for him.....

I fond it very difficult to believe anyone running LM is not aware of the major problems. Over 50% of the active members have left the program since July, you call that good? There hasn't been an update in over a month and they have been having tons of technical problems. A person left the group who apparently knew how to do things that no one else does. LM doesn't reply to questions. For the last month or so almost all my wu's when sent back to LM showed some type of error and were deleted from the disk. Several months ago I asked LM how long they expected to run the program, they said they hoped until at least late this year. Now with half the users gone in the last 2 months you're telling me there are no problems? I built a computer to run LM and only LM, so I like the program, its just failing.

I read about Lifemapper's mission and started running the program. I was not aware of Lifemapper problems because I let the client run and it doesn't give me any errors. I check the stats as a way to see if my machines are producing. I don't get into constantly checking the site for news. I only have the distributed computing forum and stats from the TeAm for that kind of info.

I did notice a low percentage of active members, but it didn't seem any lower than all the other programs. I guess every DC project has issues, so that is no reason for me to leave. However, technical problems and wasted research are another matter. Do you have some knowledge that the WU's are no longer being used (as is rumored for classic SETI) or that technical problems are ruining the WU's? How can I check to see if my WU's have errors or are being deleted?
