OK I get a call from a friend who i've done computer work for before. she says her hard drive is dying "again" (last time before she met me, she shipped her pc off to a data recovery place and paid like a $1000 for her data, it was probably the same as this time
rolleye.gif
)

I try to keep her happy as she has the money to pay well... I go out there and her 13yr old son has loaded up so much P2P crap programs I can barely login (P4 1.7, 512MB ram) somehow he has uninstalled her antivirus and has like 20-30 spyware/music sharing programs on there.

it keeps spontaneously rebooting all the time, so I take it back to the office. can't install norton on there, took me about 2 hours to remove all the friggin programs he installed,

I finally get AVG anti-virus to install, lo and behold what do I find... KLEZ out the ying yang :| I should break his little fingers.

at least I got the mom to agree to put a password on it so he can no longer touch it.

/end rant

moral of the story...keep your anti-virus up 2 date and scan everynight!

big deal, you are getting paid for it. instead of telling the kid what NOT to do, tell him what he should do, and try to expalin to him why what he did isnt a good thing

Sounds like when I helped a friend remove spyware and junk programs from the computers on the pay-to-play LAN at their game store. One of the machines was acting as a dedicated server for a filesharing program, they all had tons of spyware, each machine averaged at least five different chat programs, and it looked like anytime they had received those pop-up windows saying "Install Gator Because It R0xx0rz Your B0xx0rz!" they had clicked "Accept." :(

Why don't you tell the kid to use common sense to avoid viruses like some users around here do.

I see a different moral of this story... Kids ruin computers and thus help the economy (and maybe those ppl who repair these kid-broken computers).

I agree... burn them all!

Nah dont killem, their good for doing the chores around the house and mowing the lawn, shoveling the sidewalk and such. When mine give me trouble I just paint'em green and tellem to stand completely still out on the front lawn so people think their lawn knomes or Leprechauns. When I think they've worked off their mistake, its back to the thumb-screws and leg-irons.

They'll appreciate it when they get older.

Yes, have a 2-hour training session where you teach him how to scan for viruses, introduce him to Kazaa Lite, and then charge his mother for doing so. Let her take car of explaining to him that the next time Mr. McVeigh has to do this it's coming out of his allowance. :D

its uncanny how computer illiterate ppl seem to attract all the viruses and trojans. im sure it's not jusdt a matter of scanning. i scan all my files and i have never encountered a virus/trojan (except once to test my virus scanner, downloaded on purpose) and i download *alot* of various stuff.

BINGO!!

You should be giving this kid lollypops. He's the reason you have a job, and stupid people need their computers fixed. He's your bread and butter.
