I like a clean desktop and want to move my shortcut icons to my hidden taskbar like I could in XP and I don't want to "pin" it to anything.. How may I do this? Also, can you move your fav's from XP to 7 via an external hd?
I must be getting senile in my old age.

As far as I know, you hide the taskbar the same way you did in XP.

Right click -> Properties -> Auto-Hide the taskbar.

Any time you drag something up there, you pin it. It is shortcuts.

Although with the ability to hit the windows key and type exactly what you're looking for, mouse movements are just sooo wasteful. ;)

So you want to put your shortcuts into the quick launch rather than pin them?

Right click your taskbar, go to toolbars, then check Quick Launch.

Where USERNAME is the name of the user profile, I think you need to copy the contents of your favorites folder from XP under" C: \Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Favorites to a folder on your external drive/media of choice (i.e. flash drive, CD/DVD, external hard drive, flash media, etc). Then, in Win7, you'll copy these favorites from your external drive over to C: \Users\USERNAME\Favorites.

As far as the taskbar is concerned, are you referring to the XP quick launch toolbar? If so, here are instructions on how to get a facsimile of it back (I much prefer this -- can't tolerate those "pinned" applications myself....):
