Dumb SLI/Crossfire mobo question

It's been a while since I've upgraded my mobo/cpu, so I'm out of the loop. What's the deal with SLI and Crossfire? Do you need a motherboard to specifically support it in order to use it? Can a single motherboard support both SLI and Crossfire?
Thanks for any answers.

Currently, only Nvidia makes SLI-compatible boards. However, other manufacturers will be making SLI boards in the future.

Xfire is not out yet, but should be shortly. There are no motherboards that support both SLI and Xfire.
