Dumb RAM question (KT266A)

Ok, forgive me for asking this possibly dumb RAM question:

Mobo: Epox 8KHA+ (KT266A)
CPU: Ath XP 1700+

Question: Can I use PC3200 memory sticks on this? I want to use 2 x 512mb PC3200 DDR RAM sticks, that I can pick up for really cheap at a sale.

Right now, I've got 2 x 256mb PC2100 on it. The board has 3 slots, but the third is unreliable.


(Note: The above PC3200 ram... I can carry that over to a future Ath64 system, right?)

Yes. it should work fine in that board. It will just run @ 2100 speeds. You can then use it when you upgrade to the A64.

There is the *slight* chance your board might not like that particular 3200, but the chances are low.

any DDR that is newer, should work on any DDR board even if it's older.

it has this wonderful thing called backwards compatibility

I have used my PC3500 in my last 2 or 3 motherboards without problem, and never actually RAN the RAM at 433 Mhz

Yes ... remember that the quoted speed grades are merely the MAXIMUM speed. SDRAM technology (DDR or SDR) is not a fixed-speed technology, neither is there a (relevant) lower limit on the operating speed.
