Dumb quick question about the Presidency run.

Seems sort of dumb to let either VP run. For example, if Obama got severely sick -- Would Hilary automatically be upgraded for Presidency run, or would Biden take over?

There would probably be a court battle over whether the name of the current nominee can/must/should remain on the ballot, with each side's opinion based solely on whether they want that nominee's name on the ballot.

That would indeed be weird. Would they postpone the election?

I'm sure that whatever side had the sick candidate would then be a sure loss...

Anyone can run for President that meets the age and citizen requirements.

But not as the party's candidate.

Hmm, I think when Rudy Giuliani backed out of his run for Senate due to illness, the party just picked someone else to run instead. (Ironically, he ran against Hillary, so if something happens to Obama...)

Yup, I think the party would have to nominate someone. I'm not sure what would happen if it were really close to the election such that ballots couldn't be re-printed in time, though.

The Republicans would call another convention with the delegates voting for the new candidate. With that happening, you could see someone like Romney or Guiliani winning.

I'm not sure how the Democrats handle it.

Got a laugh from me :)

I would assume both parties would hold a quick vote, but it wouldn't be pretty.

Something like this happened a few years ago in Minnesota when Sen. Paul Wellstone was killed in a plane crash just days before the election. Walter Mondale ended up taking the reins, getting an official nomination from the Democratic party, but he lost pretty badly. My guess is it would work the same way - they'd nominate a new candidate. I imagine it would probably be Hillary.

Had Wellstone lived through the election and died after winning, I'm not sure what would happen. What happened in 2002 was our governor, Jesse Ventura, appointed Dean Barkley (of the Independence party) to serve out Wellstone's term.

Since the presidential election is really 51 separate elections, I think it'd be a disaster. Each state would have its own laws about what would have to happen. But you're not really voting for the candidates, you're voting for the electors who are pledged to vote for the candidate - so would it really matter if McCain or Obama was unable to run? Their electors could still be elected, and then I guess they'd vote for whomever they want. That person would of course be a new nominee picked by the party.
