Dumb Question

Do you need a copper shim for your (or between the) cpu and heatsink? I thought I knew what a shim was, usually something you put into something to space it out or to level it off, but that doesnt make too much sense for a heatsink. Either way, do I need one or not?

Oh by the way: The reason I ask is because I may be picking up a new CPU (maybe the XP 2700+) and need a hs/fan combo. I was thinking about the Thermalright SK-7 and the SVC 80X25 mm 32.5 CFM 3 pin fan (which runs around $23 from SVC). This will work right? Any other/better suggestions?

Thanks!

Shims only help you install the heatsink without chipping the core. Most people don't use them, because if they are 1mm too tall or too short, your CPU = teH Fried. It's best not to use one in my opinion.

Ok, well I have never put a hs on a cpu before, so do you think I should get one? Will it be easier and safer if I do get one?

Get the shim if it makes you feel safer. A XP 2700 isn't exactly cheap either.
