Don't overthink it. 980 isn't worth buying at all so no need to even dwell on its specs. Depending on your budget, if you can at least afford the 970 level card, you should be looking at 3 cards: 970/390 or 980Ti.

970/390 for 1080p/some 1440p
980Ti for 1440p

Between the 970 and 390, depending on the game, they trade blows at 1080p. For 1440p, 390 wins. If you want to keep your card beyond 2 years, I'd most likely pick the 390 over 970, say Sapphire Nitro 390. If you have a lower end/older CPU, and a 400W or lower PSU, pick the 970. If you are building a brand new i5/i7 rig with a 500W+ PSU, then this point isn't relevant.

Between the 2 970s you linked, both are excellent. If noise is a priority, pick the MSI Gaming or Asus Strix. If customer service and lower price matters more, pick the EVGA 970.

EDIT: Actually in the UK, among the 970s, there is also this Gainward GTX970 PHOENIX NVIDIA Graphics Card 4GB.
-> You'd get 1.3Ghz+ Boost
-> One of the quietest and coolest 970s
http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/86732-gainward-geforce-gtx-970-phoenix/?page=11

You can look up the benchmarks of 970 vs. 390 (~290X) here.

One added benefit of 970 is free Rainbow 6 Seige or AC Syndicate game. If you are interested in either game, that's another incentive to pick it up over the 390.

Hi thank you for the informative info. Sadly I'm on my phone atm and I can't really do any fast googling right now. From what you are saying the 390 seems abit better than the 970. Which one would you pick? Also what is the 390 called? I see 380 from your link? What is the 'X' 380X mean?

You'll probably want to read some tech introductory blogs to get a feel.

But the GeForce is the model of chip, the graphics processing unit (GPU), made by Nvidia.

MSI is a manufacturer that takes the GeForce chip from Nvidia, and builds a discrete expansion card around it.

So car analogy, GeForce is like a type of engine, rolls royce engine. MSI is like Ford. On Ebay, someone can say they are selling the Ford car, or they are selling the car with the Rolls Royce engine, but people would still know which thing it was from either description.

again I typed in 390 graphic card on eBay and I get so many diff ones.

Im thinking of getting this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Powercolo...254473?hash=item58c8755409:g:WAYAAOSw9N1Vzrq-
what is powercolour? is that the right one>? what is the actual name of the card?
should I get the MSI version or the one you linked on scan.co.uk?
what does the 'OC' mean in your one? Sapphire AMD Radeon R9 390 NITRO OC Graphics Card - 8GB does that mean the card is already OC?
i typed in the one u suggested on ebay but most of them are from the US. Scan is from UK right? they should take around 1-3 days?

The PC subforums are just that, subforums.

Hello Cappuccino,
generally you can ignore most of the numbers in those descriptions. The important bits are:
The graphics card model, in the price class you're looking for there are (from slowest to fastest)
Nvidia Geforce GTX970 and AMD Radeon R9 390 (both around the same speed)
Nvidia Geforce GTX980 and AMD Radeon R9 390x (dito)
Nvidia Geforce GTX 980Ti, AMD Radeon Fury and AMD Radeon Fury X.

Generally, from these cards the following three are considered to be good deals: The GTX970, the R9 390 and the GTX980Ti. The
GTX980Ti, because it's pretty much the single fastest GPU out there, but it's also quite expensive.
The GTX970, because it's still quite fast and at a very reasonable price for its performance, dito for the R9 390. Between the two, the R9 390 tends to be a bit faster, but it also needs a higher rated PSU (rating is in Watts = the number followed by W; I will recommend at least 500W for both anyways, just because you won't save money by going smaller anyways).

As for Powercolor, that is one of the manufacturers that build the whole assembly. So are Club 3D, MSI, Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, Sapphire and others. The main difference between them tends to be in RMA support and the cooling assembly, but I can't rate them for you, that is specific to individual cards.
