Dumb Question

I currently havea webhost accoutn with a company and for $10/month I get 200MB and 3GB of transfer.
I know that isn't a lot compared to other places, but these guys are quite reliable.

Anyways, I notice that they have reseller account for $8.95 that offer 800MB and 10GB of transfer.

What the hell? Why shouldn;t I jsut get one of those for myself, or is there usually a catch?

No catch with reseller accounts.

However, i'm sure RossMAN will be along soon to tell you about much better deals! 😉

The thing is they give me 99.5uptime and I like that security. AS it turns out it is hosted on rackshack and has no backups or uptime guarentee.

I am hestitant to say the least. Should I be?

Who is your current host? I'm guessing Dixiesys.com/8-95.com

BTW Rackshack renamed to EV1 a while ago but we still call it Rackshack 🙂

http://www.telnap.com/ scares me.

I really want to be loyal to my host, but some of this stuff is awesome:

$99.50/year (2 mo/ free)

1,500MB Web space
? 35,000MB Bandwidth

🙁

No offense to DeviousTrap but I usually advise against paying yearly. His prices are very affordable as is, he recently unveiled new DirectAdmin pricing I think 1.5GB/30GB for $7.20 with DirectAdmin and Installatron is available!

Read my post here.

Aye, Dixie. No frills, but then again, no problems.

I emailed them so hopefully I get a response soon concerning pricing for 400MB/10GB

Good choice. Dixiesys.com (actually 3-95.com) was my very first web host and I have since them referred at least 70+ new clients to Gary Harris. He runs a good ship!

I haven't seen the email yet but I'm just getting started on my morning email so I may answer this twice.

A few clarifications - 8-95 actually puts servers in the same place as dixiesys now, we negotiated a better pricing for our colocation which makes it actually cheaper than ev1servers for us to do that, I thought I updated our info page but I spend more time worrying about things other than "did I update the web site" I'll try and make the appropriate updates to clarify that new customers go into GNAX in Atlanta where we have a private cage.

8-95 offers no guarantees implied, suggested, hinted at, or otherwise. And when you get down to the nitty gritty, regardless of the pretty words and bold claims neither will most any other budget host, it's not feasible.

On that note - we put "around" 160-220 customers per server on an 8-95 box, and "around" 40 resellers on an 8-95 reseller box. We put 100, and no more, on a Dixiesys box with the guaranteed uptime. And that uptime is guaranteed if the downtime isn't scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance then if the server's down for over .5% there are refunds given (the refund policy is on the web site). So far I don't think I've seen uptime on a "premium" server under 99.7 or 99.8%.

ALL of our servers whether 8-95 or Dixiesys back up weekly to our backup server and also keep local backups. This backup does go against the allotted disk space and people can (and do) opt out of the backups but it's an opt-out not an opt-in function (it's ON unless you turn it off). We don't guarantee to have the backups and we strongly urge you not to count on us having them, but in an emergency we'll "most likely" have a backup of your data on the backup server unless you opted out, but again no guarantees (download your backups once in a while it only takes a minute and they're right there in /home/username/dailybackup ready for ftping at a moment's notice). If we have to get a backup off the backup server for someone we charge $20 UNLESS it's our fault the backup is needed (busted harddrive or deleting an account that shouldn't have been, etc).

All servers are Directadmin without Installatron. I may consider starting to use Installatron on new servers after I've had a chance to price it and look into it a bit more.
