alright...so my new external HD is great...but it makes this high-pitched noise that is starting to drive me nuts. Can I unplug it for extended periods of time...like when I want to go to sleep, and not lose data? Thanks.

Go ahead.. Thats the point of having an external drive..

Unplugging the drive has no affect on the data. It's like turning off your computer for the night.
