Dumb question from new Laser Printer owner

episodic

Lifer
Snagged a laser printer other day for cheap. Just got a toner refill, etc.

Do laser printers periodically come to life and 'turn a little'?

This is my first laser - and every so often it comes to life on it's own and 'turns' just a little.

Hope I make sense. . .

Is this normal?

Sorry, you make no sense what so ever. I am prepared to try and help you as I have some experience with laser printers, but I?m not entirely sure what you?re trying to say.

Well every so often, the printer appears to start to warm to print on it's own. Obviously, when I do this I'm not printing. I figured it was keeping the toner warm or something.

my laserjet 2300 turns on a little a few minutes after a print job...other than that, not at all!

Laser printers stay idle and enter stand by state when not in use. Your printer will only become active when it receives a print job, only then will your printer start to warm up and eventually print your document.

I know exactly what you're talking about- I used to work in a cubicle w/ a laser printer right next to me- I worked the last shift available so towards the end it was pretty silent in there. There would be days when I was just browsing the web or somthin and the printer would come to life for a split second and scare the living crap out of me.
Does it happen to be a lexmark?

not true for all printers- read my post above- it would "warm up" for a second when I was the only user that had access to it, and was just browsing the web.

That?s a strange characteristic, one I?ve never experienced myself.

I?ve been around many Lexmark printers new and old for extended periods of time, and I can say I've never experienced this phenomenon before. That's not to say it doesn't happen.

not sure if it matters- but it was set up as a network printer- not directly plugged in to my computer, but I was the only one w/ access to it.
Ya it was weird, I have been around many lasers and never had it happen, this one would do it every couple hours of being idle- would stay in idel mode but would wake up for about a second.

Laser printers have fusers (2 rollers one hard one soft + pressure) in them to fuse the toner to the paper.

When the machine is on it always has some heat.

Once in a while it rotates the fusing rollers preventing the roller from getting an indent on it causing it to fail.

This is not unusual. Some laser printers do this to keep the rollers from developing flat spots.
